Did I read somewhere on this message board that official cards don't work with the Humax 5400.

    Is this true?

Also I undestand can the 5400 is now embedded for all types of cards but will only accept unofficial cards. Can someone explain or am I totally wrong?

I used to have a Canal+ Blauw sub, and it worked fine.
If you patch the Hummy for "allCAM", offical cards wont work then.

    Thanks for the reply chernobyl.

If the Humax is patched for all cards can it "unpatched" again?

Yes, you just replace the "allCAM" software with offical Humax Digital software.

But be warned, doing this a lot can cause complications and completely screw up your reciever.

Something else which just occured to me.

    There are 2 versions of the 5400 : "5400 IRCI" and "5400 IRCI z"

Basically the IRCI is the original model and retails about €150 more than the "z".
The "z" was released a budget reciever but all of the hardware was the same except the COM port was disabled.

If you buy the "z" generally the retailer has already patched it to enable its COM port and also patched it for "allCAM".

Personally if i was going to buy an STB for both offical and "non offical" viewing i would buy [plug] Digenius CI [/plug] and i would buy the "Irdeto FreeCAM" which is pretty much the same as the Irdeto CAM in the Humax 5400 but can run any encryption (excluding VG/Power VU/Conax) without the need for STB software and so you can use both types of viewing cards.

Thats interesting. I've looked at the page for the Digenius CI.

Is the 'Irdeto FreeCam' you mention the same as the 'Irdeto 4.7 Allcam' available on the same site. It doesn't mention a price. How much would I expect to pay for one?

Sorry, the price of the AllCam is on the site at €237.50. I missed it the first time I looked.

Where does one get appropriate cards?

Also, BTW what do the letters "STB" stand for in the earlier email?

Thanks for the plug :-) Chernobyl, dont forget to add vat at 21%, if you email me privately I can give more info about cards as we do not sell them ourselves.

    Thanks

    STB= Set Top Box.

Tony, who posted above runs the site so like he said pm him.

For non offical viewing you will need the following card/software combination.

    Card: "Silver Card"
    software : "DS9"

    or

    Card: "Funcard2"/3
    Software: 4/5/"6 in 1"

Get your self an elvis programmer and your are away!

Thanks for all that. I have sent Tony a pm. I'm sure he'll send me on the price details.

If I need anything else Chernobyl I'll be in touch. What you suggest makes a lot of sense but I can the cost mounting up also.

I would be prepared to spend €1000 if you have none of the hardware to begin with.
Most of your viewing will be on Astra/Hotbird i assume but do go fo a DiseqC motorised system with a 1.2 Channel Master/Triax, you will have so much fun, oh and get a capture card if possible.

I'm living in the Cork area and no one here wants to get involved in a motorised system. They say
    1. there are not many channels on the other satellites apart frpm Hotbird and Astra.
    2. the motorised systems give a lot of trouble and require a high degree of maintenance.
    3. they cost too much.

I was very interested at first in going down the motorised route but in view of the comments made as above I'm inclined to go for a two LNBs for Hotbird and Astra 19.2.

One question: I presume it is possible to upgrade at a later stage if a get a suitable receiver at this stage? Is that correct?

Not true ask anyone who is now watching Man Utd on Hispasat, motorised systems if properly set up do not require high maintanence. Cost is relative a jaguar costs a lot but are still sold because people like what they do. You could go for the echostar now with two lnbs and upgrade to a full motorised later or go for the digenius and upgrade to a h/h mount later but these are alot slower to change between satellites. Guys please know that I have disabled the private msg function as I find it too cumbersome, I can still be reached at tony@satellite.ie

    Thanks

Personally i dont see the point in getting a "real" system if your not driving a 1.8M+ dish.
A diseqC motor will drive a 1.2 dish from 45/45 in 45 seconds but can be as high as 1:30 if you have the polarity wrong.
They'll run quicker if you switch to Horizontal polarity and feed them with 18 volts rather than 12 volts if you switch to vertical.
Also they are a little noise.
