Why do feminists say "woman" instead of "women"?

I've noticed this before that some people say "woman" when they're supposed to use the plural "women". I was reminded of this again when Nell McCafferty kept on saying "woman" instead of "women" on Questions and Answers the last day. Does anyone know why this is?
