Leader Says Uganda Has No Homosexuals

While we perform some server maintenance, please enjoy this

After accepting an award for his government's successful campaign against AIDS, Uganda's president declared Sunday that his country has no homosexuals, one of the groups most threatened by the global epidemic.

The comment by President Yoweri Museveni follows a report by a human rights group that accused Uganda and other countries of torturing and mistreating their homosexual populations.

Museveni has led an aggressive AIDS prevention campaign since
1986 that has been credited with slashing the infection rate among adults in the African nation from 28 percent to less than 10 percent. He accepted an award for his efforts from the Commonwealth, the association of Britain and its former colonies, at a meeting of the group in Coolum, Australia.

Afterward, he listed the ways that the AIDS virus spreads in Uganda. "First, it goes through unprotected sex. We don't have
homosexuals in Uganda so this is mainly heterosexual transmission,'' he said. Human rights watchdog Amnesty International said in a report last June that it had documented cases of homosexuals being tortured in Uganda. The report compiled alleged cases of torture and mistreatment in 30 countries including Uganda, Pakistan, Argentina, Russia and the United States.

Museveni said Sunday that the AIDS virus also spread through "careless blood transfusions'' and through tribal customs such as circumcision in which the same knife is used for multiple people.

Ah yes, well, I can see where he's coming from. I'm from Monaghan, and there are no gay people there either[1].

[1] Admittedly there are a surprising number of gay/lesbian Monaghan people living OUTSIDE Monaghan, but hey, that's not what counts!

That could explain it!, I’ve noticed a surprisingly high number of immigrants were of the homosexual variety. I'm not make any judgement, or being racist but I have noticed alot of male immigrants were attracked to the same sex!

Before anyone starts a rant etc. please bare in mind theses are merely my observations.

Ooh CT's not gonna be happy when he gets here ^^. I'm pretty sure some Irish leader from the late 19th century (if there had have been one) would have proudly boasted about the abscence of gays in Ireland too

well, since 95% of the population is catholic, and its a cardinal sin to be homosexual, i would suggest that only minority groups which dont matter are gay in ireland. and since we dont count minotiy groups (or people from monaghan) it could be argued that there is no homosexuality in ireland.
otherwise wed have the spanish inquisition in like a shot,

and no-one expects the spanish inquisition........

    No its not!
Being a homo isn't a sin, its performing the sexual act that's a sin... and rightly so :p

A lot of gay people living out in the sticks move to Dublin first chance they get.

So I'd hazard a guess that the percentage of gay people living in dublin is significantly higher than the national average.

As for the catholic church, we've never listened to those old perverts

Anyway we have our own religion now - its called Kylie Minogue :D

In certain other cultures, what we may 'perceive' as 'gay', they wouldn't percieve as gay (e.g. in certain Arab countries it's considered normal for same-sex, non-couples to hold hands in public).

And while not agreeing to "There are NO gay people in MY country! (Ugandan President)", I imagine that attitude can maek people want to leave home.

Exactly, the Ugandan president is clearly either

    (a) Disavowing all knowledge of gay people in his country, because he is genuinely unaware of the presence of homosexuals in his country.

    (b) Denying the existence of homosexuals because he views their behaviour as illicit, immoral or illegal (BTW I'm not sure if it's illegal in Uganda or not).

In either case someone should wake him up to the fact that homosexuality is not dependent on race, country of origin (even if it is illegal) or indeed even sex.

Dunno about this, although I would suspect so. The 'scene' down here in Waterford is quiet enough, though it's improved somewhat (depending on your point of view) over the past few years. Dublin, of course has a few well known watering holes down Georges street, beyond that, I don't think there's much to distinguish the city from most other cities in Ireland.

BTW Shinji, I'm sure that even if Monaghan isn't the most 'liberated' town in Ireland, yourself and Kevo can make up for the rest of the counties' inhibitions ;)

It's bigger - which means that for a minority group like homosexuals, there are more people like themselves there, and hence the perception that there is more tolerance. Minority groups are size queens when it comes to towns and cities ;)

I did not have sexual relations with that man - well, not outside Munch's copy of Paint Shop Pro, anyway :)

(Besides, I don't live in Co Monaghan any more - and never lived in Monaghan town, tsk, the very thought! The comment about there being no gay people in Monaghan but plenty of gay Monaghan people elsewhere was made to me by a delightful young lady from Clones who I knew vaguely when I was in school, and later ran into in Dublin... along with her girlfriend.)

According to records of course. I was baptised a Roman Catholic, but have since denounced that baptism. Of course the church would still list me as one of their 'flock', as would government birth certificates etc.

So statements like that are just crap, seeing as at least half of my age group would feel the same. :)

Have ye filled out the paperwork? ;)

Possibly yes, I think you need to be excommunicated to leave the RC church, otherwise you are given the freedom to come and go as you choose.

I don't think birth cert.s list religion. About the only official (i.e. governmental) document that would, would be the census.

    Wide ranging statement? ;)

Don't get me started on that......:p I've had people seriously ask me 'Who gave you the authority to denounce your baptism?'. Uuh I DID. ffs
