Thought some of you kids might be interested in this talk some of my netsoc buddies are putting on soonish...
A little bit of much needed techno-paranoia over the holidays. It's not
during term, but this was just too good to pass up...

Lance Spitzner (FBI) and Jim Settle (Sun Miscrosystems)
Wednesday, 20th March, 7:00pm
Ussher Theare, Arts Building
Cost to you? Nothing.

These top-notch computer security experts are also speaking at the 'The
National IT and E-security Summit'. NITES would cost you 714 euro. The
Netsoc talk? Free!

Hackers, penetration, exploiting and, eh, packets.* All the hard, armoured
action you need for some Easter fun. There will be discussion, of course,
and drinks to follow.

Below are brief biographies of two speakers. If you're in Dublin on 20th
March, this is defintely one NOT to miss.

See you then!

Netsoc PRO

LANCE SPITZNER: Senior Security Architect, Sun Microsystems, USA and
founder, The Honeynet Project

Lance Spitzner is a self confessed geek whose job is to do battle with the
bad guys. He spent seven years in the army, following which he became
involved in the world of information security. Now he fights the bad guys
with IPv4 packets, as opposed to 120mm SABOT rounds. He is founder of the
Honeynet Project (www.project.honeynet.org), a non-profit research group
whose goal is to learn the tools, tactics, and motives of the blackhat
community and share these lessons learned with the security community.
Spitzner is also lead author of the book "Know Your Enemy" and publisher
of a variety of security papers.

JIM SETTLE: Chief Executive, Settle Services in Technology and former head
of Computer Crime Unit, FBI

Settle re-organised the FBI's efforts in dealing with network computer
crime. As the former head of the FBI's National Computer Crime
Squad, he
knows the methods used to break into public switched networks, the
internet, and packet switched common carriers. Jim co-authored the
"Internet and Internetworking Security Handbook" and the recent Simon and
Schuster book, "@ Large," is about Settle and the FBI's National
Computer Crime Squad. He is regularly consulted on network security by the major
print and TV media including NBC, CNN, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal
and Wired.

* Not forgetting the cracks, holes and breaches. (I'm going to hell.)

hopefully some of you crazy kids can make it, i'm hoping i can anyway.

Don't take it personal Jerry :)
I know you are interested in that type of thing..its all very exciting I must admit ;) and if you have anything constructive to say in response to my critiscism of these two fine "experts" please say it.
I'll say what I probably should have said about the book "Know your Enemy" and others like "Hacking Exposed".
"Somtimes you should judge a book by its cover."
Is that constructive enough to your liking?

Thank you.

I am not taking anything personally. I am the moderator of this board, and I don't want this straying off topic.

and if you have anything constructive to say in response to my critiscism of these two fine "experts" please say it.

I didn't see any valid or informed criticism. This is not a debate, this is moderation.

<SNIP>

Is that constructive enough to your liking?

No. If you have read "Know your enemy" and have a review to offer on that basis, then please do. If you have read "Hacking exposed" and have a review to offer, then please start another thread.

What? Make sense, Mr. Warrior, please! :)

In the end it was only 1 yoyo at the door, sweeet :)

Pity Lance didn't make it, I was looing forward to his talk.

Jim was very good, reminded me of an old lecturer of mine in Castlebar (John Jordan in case anyone knew him). It was less technical than I would have liked though.

The 10 points he was talking about are on his Securing your Network page. His homepage is at www.settleservices.com - could do with a spruce up maybe? :)

Anyways enjoyable night was had.

Cheers,
Al.

Was interesting, but disappointing that the other guy never showed up. Anyone know what happened to him?

Yeah I've been talking to him by mail - he said that he wasn't contacted with details of where or when the talk was. Probably cell-phone problems or something like that. In any case, he's disappointed he wasn't able to be there.

Afaik, he was going to give a speech at the honeynet in general, working from this presentation. The other presentation he has on that site is about statistical modeling.

Hope this helps,
Al.
