Had a massive row with my house-mate about this one.

Which requires more skill, Rally driveing or Formula 1??

I'd say Rally driving, hands down.

ahh, the uninformed...me point PiE to check out some history and see that Rally driver WC "X" was once given the luxury of driving a Williams F1 car, crashed it and fractured both his legs whilst the F1 driver took that Rally drivers car and trashed stage time after stage time with it...

These sports are vastly different, the question cannot really be answered, there are too many variables that cant be measured, so jusr appreciate both of them as way cool to watch!

But surely thats due to the fact that rally cars are more like conventional cars than F1 cars are, and the F1 driver wouldn't have felt so "out of his element" so to speak?

I am the uninformed -> personified though :]

Hard to say, I'd imagine WRC is more physically demanding than F1, but there's probably a greater margin of error in WRC. All this is based on armchair knowledge of course.

you have to be physicly fit for both sports but 10ths of seconds usually decide a good F1 race

Dont get me wrong i think WRC is class. I might even go as far as saying its marginaly more eventful but you have to rely on the pit crew alot in F1.

They are two completely different types of racing:

Unless a WRC driver has had some form of track background obviously they'd have problems driving an F1 car. The WRC driver is getting vastly more speed and power (unless he regularly drives tuned old group A cars) and has to adapt to a type of racing completely defined by smoothness. The time they have to react is greatly reduced magnifying mistakes.

An F1 driver on the other hand is stepping down in speed and power. They are driving a highly evolved road car and can compensate for mistakes more quickly due to lower speed.

Comparing their skills in this way isn't really a relevant comparison.

Er... have you mixed up WRC and F1 there? Road car? Lower speeds? Eh?

    PiE is right.

F1 cars go in excess of 200 kph on most tracks.

If an F1 car slipes up its up to the guy behind him to react fast.

in WRC you hardly ever meet another driver on the track

They are two different sports in my oppinion. It's like comparing Football to Cricket.

The question can't be answered and I love both sports the same.

Eeek, I don't love football and cricket. I love football, WR and F1.

Which skills are we talking about here? There are 2 main skills involved in both sports. Car handling, speed and precision.

The way I see it WRC requires more car handling skills than F1. I don't mean that F1 doesn't require this skill but when you look at power slides, handbrakeing and holding the car sideways on a long left/right 1 or 6 (depending on your pace note tendencies) - especially in the snow or on gravel.

F1 doesn't require these same skills but then they have to handle the car at the top speeds and theres nearly no margin for error. WRC cars don't reach these speeds.

Then theres the precision factor, much more important in F1 than in WRC for the simple reasons mentioned above.

Methinks its a 50-50, both sports require different skills. The skills they do have in common are used at different levels in the two sports.

Im going to TRY and compare them from the spectators point of view i.e watching it not driving it.

Crashes dont happen often in F1 but when they do theres always a good chance of total carnage.

on the other hand WRC has instant action but not always exciting.
