Anyone know of any new gay channels going on the Sky digital platform - it's about time there were.

I don't think there are any TV channels planned at present, however Gaydar radio is on channel 889 on the EPG.

Actually, when you think about it, this must be one of the larger minorities NOT catered for on Sky Digital. The gay community are also recognised as being among the most affluent segments, and so you would think would be worthwhile pursuing.

Perhaps there is not a great deal of specific programming in this area.

A while back, there was mention of a station called Rainbow TV starting up. But that was the last I heard of it...

It's interesting to define a channel purely by the sexuality of it's viewers.

Gay people have as many wide and varied interests as anyone else, so the idea of a "gay lifestyle" channel is open to accusations of pandering to stereotypes.

Who decides what a "gay lifestyle" is ?

Graham Norton is a gay man, and I don't think anyone would deny that he is quite camp, but is his show a "gay" programme ? I'd say there's a much higher percentage of straight peolple watching it than gay.

If a channel is going to start defining itself as "gay", I can't see how it can be anything other than a channel about sex.

Similarly if I saw a channel described as being for "straight" people, I would also have to assume it was about sex.

well..... Charles a good question ....
yep gay people watch all the other channels and have many interests like everyone else ... hey I like heavy metal [Kerrang], speak Chinese [Phoenix], love the Simpsons [SKy One] am trying to renovate my flat [UK Style], etc etc etc but I do sometimes CRAVE.....
    1. Films and series that have gay issues in them and that I can identify with [most mainstream channels won't touch these films with a barge pole!]
    2. Information & documentaries on issues concerning gay men and women [apart from C4 & BBC2 occasionally nothing much]
    3. Cult Gay TV!!! AbFab, Ellen, Queer as Folk, Priscilla etc....

The whole idea for me of Digital TV is that it can provide minority TV and for the gay community this is more than just another porno channel.... if we follow your argument, we would have no need for womens', black, mens' channels.... there are different interest groups out there so let's cater for them....

Sorry Charles, I beg to differ.

In the same way that you could argue that Men & Motors or F1
coverge primarily caters to a straight male audience, a gay channel would simply deal with issues/programmes that interest gay men.

These could include any number of things from information on legal issues in different countries, info on HIV research, to chat shows/comedies.

While I believe that sex is important for all of us, I think it would be wrong to restrict it to that.

Jesus Winsock your some chancer, any sniff of a chance to make money on illegal or pirated goods and your in there like a light. You've already been told this on the for sale and wanted boards, you should chill a bit because I don't think the board operators are too happy with you ATM.

Stiabhna: Rainbow Channel TV has been operating for ages now, however it's more common name is 'RCT' and like all hardcore European channels you haven't a hope of seeing it on Sky. RCT is the gay/lesbian hardcore sister channel of 'SCT' or Satisfaction Channel TV which is for us straight people (sorry had to throw that in). You can buy either channel or both on the same smart card, their pretty expensive though, you might be able to pick up a pirate card for them, theres plenty of them floating about. Also their keys are all over the net. Or deal with them direct at: http://www.sctdirect.co.uk/

They simulcrypt on Hotbird 13 deg. East in both Irdeto2 and Viaccess, so you'll be needing the right hardware. Talk to the lads at http://www.sat-2000.com/ or Tony from these boards at http://www.irelands-satellite.ie about getting the right gear for you.

My personal choice would be the Humax 5400 from sat-2000 which comes pre patched with software to allow Seca /Viaccess/ Irdeto and Nagravision channels to be decoded using only the internal Irdeto cam. Saves you a fortune buying lots of different CAMs!

    Blade,

Thanks for the info. Sorry, I thought Rainbow TV was something completely different.

If it's an "adult" channel, it's probably boring as all hell. Had access to the Beate Uhse on Premiere World for a while... and that was, well... yawn... how should I put it?

    Hi

I think some wires might be crossed. The Rainbow Network TV channel that some people were asking about has yet to be launched. AFAIK It's an offshoot from rainbownetwork.co.uk. It wont be a hardcore porno channel, I know this because they were trying to buy a film I made (and if my film was porno I'd be making a load more dosh than I am). They will be a lifestyle channel and I think the plan would be that the station would be offered as a standalone primuim channel on Sky Digital.

I'm not sure if the plans have stalled coz they should have been broadcasting by now....

Yeah this ones deffo a hard core porno channel so as atgate says we're probably talking about 2 completely different channels, just a coincidence in the name 'Rainbow' and them both being Gay channels. What does the word 'rainbow' have to do with queers anyway?

chernobyl: When they moved off Irdeto to Irdeto2 they still stayed on Viaccess for at least a good while. I don't know if their still there now because the codes I have on my card at the moment don't work on that channel, but it wasn't long ago when I seen it on Via and their web site says it is. So, I'm just presuming it still there.

Will Geoffrey , Zippy and George feature in this Rainbow Channel?
I can just imagine the queer version.
Bungle being chased around the studio by Geoffrey squealing like a pig.

Gay. TV promises to be Europe's first gay lifestyle TV channel and has started testing on Hot Bird at 13 degrees east. The channel comes from Italy and broadcasts 12.149 V SR 27500 FEC 3/4. the website is www.gay.tv

so it looks like Hotbird is the place to go if you want a Gay lifestyle channel
