Is it worth it, or is there a good chance I can walk in on launch day and buy one? And if I don' preorder one, how long would I be waiting for another shipment of those box-like objects?

500,000 units are allocated for Europe on day one, with a further 500,000 within 3 weeks of the launch. I'd advise to pre-order one just in case, but then you'd have to find a shop that's taking preorders.

Theres over 10 games on launch AFAIK,so there will be plenty of choice.

Think its twenty cos some1 said that the X-box has 18 and the GC had 2 more. 18+2=20=plenty

XBox now has twenty. And if I'm not mistaken the GC now has 21.
