Enough of all this rubbish about the premiership.

    Time to support our own.

THE LEAGUE OF IRELAND NEEDS YOU.

Time to get up off your collective asses and get out and support your local team(s). Although i dont go evry week, this season i have seen about 12 games. On an average I've seen about 3-4 goals a game and with Irish players you always garunteed a bit of bite.

The last game i saw was in Tolka

    Shelbourne 3-0 Longford

3 goals and 3 sendings off - Great entertainment

Shelbourne are a very good side (I am a neutral - Waterford United supporter) (Proof also that ex- Shels Richie Foran is having a blinder in Carlisle and many English First Division clubs wanting to sign him)

Bohs also have some quality players (Crowe/ Hunt)

So lets get out there and support your own

Next Monday night, the mighty Blues clash with Dublin City in Whitehall. If we win we are back in the promotion fight.

The option is Waterford Utd. v Dublin City. 90 mins of passion only a couple of yards from the action, with our whole season relying on every kick, tackle, run............

or sitting on my fat ass watching Richard "I'm really very exited about all this" Keys and Nigel "How was I a pro footballer" Spackman analysing Southamton vs. Middlesborough

    (Do me a favour !!)

    I know where I'll be

    C'MON BLUES

Actually, I'll be going to my first League of Ireland game for about 5 years soon. League Cup Final, Limerick v Derry. Chance of Limerick's first trophy in years.

    YOP,

You missed the point completely. (Please read over slowly and you might get it)

There are many League of Ireland games which can be very entertaining. And for the spectator an enjoyable standard to watch, especially if he/she is a supporter of one of th teams

I never compared the LOI to the Premiership.

But surely going to local game is better than sitting through some the dross that SKY spin out every week.

    Hibernian v. St. Johnstone LIVE

    Yippee

I agree with you on this one. If we all got off our arses we could make the League of Ireland a better place. Entertainment or no entertainment, its all about providing for the future. And if the FAI can get someone decent in then it can be challenging with the likes of Scottish, Dutch, Belgian, Polish and Austrian leagues.

It can be done with our help. So get off yer arses people! I shall be supporting Dundalk then... how interesting!

oi, take the dutch out of there.
    they have a good league......

oh and before anyone starts shouting at me, i used to go to all shamrock rovers games in the rds.

Right right. But it could be that good. If we follow the way the Dutch set up their league.

    Premiership rubbish??

You can get U12 matches with as much excitement as a LOI match to be honest. :p
And for the spectator an enjoyable standard to watch,

Standard!!! What standard, come on, if any of the LOI teams play an english team regardless of who it is, they will always get whipped, I understand you want to get some support for the LOI and you support your local team but I have been to Terryland and then over the Old Trafford last week. There is a small difference.

BUT!!!! I do see where your coming from, but to the majority of people the LOI will never be an attraction.

"When you look at these two teams the words 'rush' and 'kick' and 'dross' all come to mind. The second half started two minutes late, I think the ball refused to come out." - Sky Sport's Rodney Marsh enjoying the clash of Leicester v Derby on Saturday.

    P.S.

    C'mon Blues

I'll be there supporting Dublin City (ex Home Farm) and sure if its a bad night or a crap match (probably both) i'll just head in to the members bar for a pint, watch Southamton vs. Middlesborough
on the huge screen and then go for a couple of games of snooker in the back. Classic

Yop have you ever been to an Eircom League game?
Admittedly games are B0||0x to watch on TV but that is an awful lot to do with camera-work.

When Pats played Shels in Richmond Park (3-2) a few months ago the game was televised live properly. When I saw the Highlights later that night it wasn't far off the standards of more major leagues.
Tolka Park is the best facilitated ground in the League and if you watch the highlights of them they are always better.

You should go to a biggish match, say Shels and Rovers on the 17th I guarantee you will enjoy the game, I don't want to give out too much, 2 years ago I had your attitude and strutted about in Liverpool Jerseys.

I'd like to say more but I have to get to the Derry game!

I live in Galway and admittedly could not see myself travelling to the smoke for a LOI match, maybe If I was up there I would go but it is not really big down here, may something to do with the Galway results!!

I totaly agree people should do more to support there own league admititly sometimes you get a bad game but you get that in any league. I go to about 25 pat's games a season and the standard is good and its much better to go and watch a game than watch it on tv you feel much more a part of the club. The best player in the league has to be Mbabazi Charles Livinstone Of Pats he turned down Parma to join them come and watch him before a big club snaps him up

The Irish (but mainly Dublin) attitude to Premiership soccer was highlighted last year when Liverpool played an Ireland XI. About half the Irish fans were wearing Liverpool shirts and were shouting on Liverpool. As a (very passive) Liverpool fan, I was absolutely disgusted. I can't say I had much respect for the stereotypical Dublin soccerhead after that.

I have to agree 100% with this thread. The title is unfortunate but the Eircom League sentiments (that's the name of the league BTW) are dead on. I support UCD (one of few) and I can honestly say that some of the best times I've had in the past few years have been at, before and after games. The craic in Cork, Derry and Longford to name just three was great this year. This is what football is about, not listening to Sky presenters telling you what to think about the game and how great this awful 0-0 draw between Bolton and Leicester or whoever is.

Of course the Eircom League isn't of the same standard as the Premiership in England, that's obvious to anyone. However the top teams would pi$$ on the English third division and compete very well in the second. This wasn't me that said this; it was Richie Foran who went to Carlisle at the start of the season and is well up the scoring charts with a very poor team. Also Northampton Town were well beaten by (I think) Pats and Bray in pre-season. The league isn't as bad as some people like to make out. The facilities in some grounds are poor and should be up-graded but Tolka, Richmond Park, Dalymount, Flancare in Longford, Turner's Cross in Cork and the Brandywell in Derry are very comfortable nice grounds with a good view of the pitch.

Final thought, let's all laugh at Rovers:D :D:D:D

if da league of ire is soo good then why aren't any players playin for da international team!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 971 ✭✭✭Ciaran

    Two reasons:

    1) It's not that good, no-one's saying it is but it's nowhere near as bad as most people like to think.

    2) Even if it was, Mick McCarthy seems unaware that club football is played outside of England. A recent newspaper article said that Phil Babb would be in with a chance of makinf the World Cup squad if a rumoured deal to move from Sporting Lisbon to West Ham came off. i.e. move from a very big Portugese team who ply in Europe nearly every year to a mid-table English team!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,093 ✭✭✭woosaysdan

ah phil babb is crap!!! i wouldnt pick him as a ballboy!!! the irish league is crap. if it was any way good then all the young players would stay here instead of goin to england to play!!! the league is under funded and crap!!!

Don't obviously follow portugese football!, he is staring out there for the last year, well worthy of a call up

Gets my vote for most ignorant post of the year

 It doesn't matter if he's crap. My point (handy thing that, you should try it some time) was that Mick won't consider him if he's in Portugal but would if he played for West Ham, where he would (presumably) be no less crap than in Portugal.
