    it sounds really stupid, but what the hell does it mean when a game goes gold?

    when the game is done, the developer gives a disk to the publisher to print..

    that is an actual gold disk..

    therefore going gold means that the game is done and is about to go into 'production' - where the millions of copies are made and put in the boxes :)

    or from another angle it means you should have the game in about a month :)

    even sometimes less that a month, it could be as soon as a week.

    I've also heard the term 'gold' used to refer to bootlegged copies that are sold in countries where the game hasn't been released yet - eg if it was released in Japan first and copied from there.
