Government confirms Euro 2008 joint bid

The Government's joint bid to host the 2008 European Soccer Championships with Scotland is to go ahead. A statement issued after a high level meeting said that some of the games might be played at Croke Park if rule changes are approved by the GAA.

Tomorrow is the deadline for the Government to commit itself to co-hosting the games with the Scottish FA. The Taoiseach wants the championships at the Fianna Fáil-backed Abbotstown complex. The Progressive Democrats want the so-called Bertie Bowl to be scrapped in favour of using Croke Park and Lansdowne Road.

A meeting between the Minister for Finance, the Tánaiste and the Minister for Sport went on for much of the evening in an attempt to hammer out a compromise. Representatives from the GAA and the FAI also attended the meeting at Government Buildings.

A carefully worded statement afterwards committed the Government to putting forward a joint bid. It made no mention, however, of the Abbotstown option, but said that the Government had been in touch with various organisations including the GAA to request their facilities.

The statement went on to say that if the GAA's rules forbidding other codes at Croke Park is changed in its April Congress, the Association would consider the request to accommodate some of the games in 2008.

Other options will also be explored until the final submission date at the end of May. This compromise statement by no means rules out the possibility that some of the matches could also be staged at the Taoiseach's pet project.

I can see all the anti-Gah heads getting up on their bandwagons right now as I speak. Why can't they use Croke Park, blah, blah, blah... Yawn.

Some advice for the FAI. Quit moaning, whining and arguing. Quit blaming everyone else for your inadequate facilities. Get your act together. Build an international soccer stadium.

While its amusing to see this carry on carrying on its does'nt matter a hoot as far as the 2008 championship is concerned
as the Scandinavians have the race won allready. True.

Maybe they would if they were given the money the Gaa have been.

I suppose it's a bit like eircom having their exchanges built as a state owned company and then not letting anyone near them when they go private.
