Mandrake 8.1 + Prophet Kyro

    Right. I had Slackware8 installed, but when I bought a new Gfx card (Prophet Kyro 4000 64mb) a few months back, I was unable to get it to work under sw8. So I dumped Linux. Downloaded Mandrake8.1 today 'cos I heard it was much easier to configure and I hoped it would work with my card. No such luck. Asked me to pick card from list Others->Kyro Series->"No sorry, not right driver". Right sure fine. Use failsafe driver then. Reboot, login:

    >Startx
    error no2
    >Sigh.

    Any tips on how to get it to work? I used Linux before but I'm not an accomplished user by any stretch of the imagination, so give it to me easy please :]

    Thanks...

    <edit>

    Bit more info wouldnt go amiss I'm sure. When I try to load the failsafe drivers for the vid card (FBDEV) I get this error:

    ERROR: "Cant call method 'Set Active' on an undefined value"

    This is in the setip/installation phase and when that error comes up, I can't go back and change the driver so when it says "Exit Now Y/N?" and I have no choice but to say Yes.

    When I reboot, login and hit startx I get this:

    XAUTH: Creating new authority file
    execve failed for etc/X11/X
    xinit: No such file or directory errno2: unable to connect to server
    xinit: No such process (errno3): Server Error.

    </edit>

    for the mandrake website
    Guillemot Prophet II (Kyro II) In Mandrake Linux 8.1

    (Contributed by Mandrake Linux user Frank Lehnen)

    " While Mandrake Linux 8.0 still set up this card with a Kyro II chip as a default VESA device (lacking the correct Linux drivers), version 8.1 does recognize it as a Kyro chip but Harddrake [more likely that's XFdrake. tom] sets color depth to 32 bit which causes a nice system hang during first (and subsequent) boot. Just set color depth to 16 bit and hope and pray for real Kyro drivers."
    Notice that Mandrake Linux 8.1 (and 8.2) does not support cards with the Kyro chipset and uses the framebuffer device instead.

    use XFDrake to change the colour depth and hope for the best

    Aye, that was it. Have to use 8bit colour + 800x600res :[

    Thanks :]

    Update X.

    www.xfree86.org , I am running 4.0.1 on FreeBSD so I think that is the most recent one but I could be wrong I guess you should check that out yourself or something.

    You could check out the Newbie Help File section of linuxnewbie

    www.linuxnewbie.org I think in there somewhere is a newbie version of how to update X or something similar.

    Gd luck
    TD.

    Here : http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/x-windows/xfree_4-gettingstarted.html

    And it looks like the latest version of X is 4.2.0 so if you follow everything in that nhf and simply get the pertinant binaries for your system and glibc version from the 4.2.0 release.......

    I do not want to touch his ass, I want to make him talk

    Mandrake 8.2 will be out soon with XFree86 4.2.0 so I would wait for that.
