Anyway I lately i.e. the last 2 dats my windows has being having several heart attacks. Explorer crashing etc.I went this evening to use the add/remove utility and I was unable to view or remove and programs, only getting this error that ive attached a screenshot of.

Ive also being having some odd goings on when I went to install Dreamweaver recently, as I ran the install it suddenly started installing Opera the mod for HL that I had an exe of as well in the same location :(

Ive done a full virus scan the usual stuff etc but the system is clean.

Any help would be appreciated as im completly stumped

It could be a number of things, did you install anything within the two days that may have buggered things up? And what service pack do you have and system specs etc?

Ive installed nothing of any consequence except for quake 3 which im pretty sure would not count for any of this.

    Specs are ...

    Win 2k Service Pack 2
    win 98 on seperate partition
    IntelP3 700 running at 770
    128 ram
    TNT2 M64

Well it's possible from your errors that some of the files are either missing or corrupt, reinstalling sp2 will install the files if missing, if that doesn't work you can try some stability sw to see if your pc is acting up, this could also be a most likely culprit, due to it working and then suddenly not if you didn't do anything, anyway first thing try sp2 and post back!

Alas the CD I had service pack 2 on is long gone... So ill have to rob another one off a mate, itll be a few days anyway

Ok den, just noticed you're overclocked by 70MHz, has it been stable before or in win98? If it hasn't that may have corrupted your files! If you can't get sp2 I will send you a copy for da price of a cd and stamp if you want :)

Nah it runs fine and stable at 770 mhz even ran decent at 825 so thats of no cause to the prob, ill try reinstalling service pack 2 anyway, and if I cant get hold of a copy handy ill give ya shout :)

Well hope it does the job and if not, I'm always up for a good brainstorm ;)

I had an unitiated install problem like this before on W98 but it may be the same issue. Some installs unpack into c:\windows\temp (c:\winnt\temp) and then install from there. They are supposed to clean up after themselves but don't always do it. Go in and wipe that contents of the directory... worth a shot...

Did you install over W98/95 or was it a completely fresh install?

I can't seem to view that attached image :(
Keep getting some error about "an unexpected error occured".
    :)
Seriously though... I have to agree with where hobbes is going here, I've had no end of problems with my old Win2k upgrade install ... best to get a fresh one.

No Win2k was the only OS on the machine when I first got it , I later partitioned off a small section for win 98 and Installed it onto it just for the reason of god knows why.But ive never had any problems as a result of the adding win98.

did you try a boot from the cd drive with the 2k cd in and try the repair option?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,148 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

The repair option when I ran it reparied some problems but not this one, ill give the reinstalling of sp2 a try

I don't like the sound of all this

I just bought myself a new system (to be built, have all parts) and I'm considering windows 2000 professional. The only reason for installing it is I'm doing my mcse's.

The system will be a slot A, 750mhz athlon.
    256MB pc133 ram. (samsung)
    20GB WD 7200rpm ATA 100.
crappy old dvd drive from september "98".
crappy cd drive from same date as above.
Chipset is a via K-7 (unsure of exact model number/manufacturer)
gfx card is a Gf2 Gts Pro 64mb DDR. (200mhz core/400mhz ram) manufactured by hercules.
    Trust 56K USB voice/fax modem.
    s.card yet to be decided.
    Codegen 350W Psu.

I expect I will have no end of problems with it, anyone care to advise on a different Os. I have a 98 machine I could reformat and put 2000 on instead. It's specs are as follows>

    PIII 1.0Ghz socket370 running at 1050Mhz at 140Fsb.
    10.2GB fujtsu 7200rpm. ATA 33
    6GB Quantum fireball 7200rpm. ATA 33
    sony cdr-drive. ATA 33.
    256MB pc133 ram (samsung)
Riva TnT2 32MB (unsure of clock speeds)
    Yamaha DS-XG s.card.
    lucent lt winmodem.
    3com 3C905C-TX NIC.
Intel I815E chipset manufactured by www.pcpartner.com
    Compaq 300W Psu.

So what do you reckon. All my hardware has been checked with the HCL for Win2k and there appears to be nothing but I know via chipsets, we have a load of them here in the office and I've had one or two at home and there's been no end of problems so which system do you think should get the upgrade to 2000.

I'm keeping 98 on one of them so I can fiddle with my dos-games etc. I'm thinking I should install on the pentium rig for minimum fuss.....

I have three systems with nearly all ms os's on them and all of which have no problems that includes win2k. Another thing is I've never used the HCL as a reference because nearly all of my hardware is unsupported. You shouldn't have any problems! All you need to make sure of is... you have service pack, latest and compatible drivers for all the hardware as soon as you've installed every driver and everything seems to be running ok (check event viewer to make sure) then run some benchmarking or stability testing software and voillah. If you want to network both systems dual boot one of them with 98/2k then you'll be able to study for your mcse, play games and learn about dual booting all in one go :)

    Have fun! ;)

PS. I'm upgrading to mcse in 2000 as well, so good luck!

i have win2k on 2 desktops and a laptop at home and ive never had any problems i couldnt fix.
i never had any problems that just appeared wither to be honest it was always something that had happened or been installed or whatever.
of all OS's ive used it is the most stable and nicest of em all.

oh and just becuase the problem isnt obvious, doesnt mean you didnt fúck it up yourself :)
