    Dolby Pro-Logic 2.

Has anyone had a chance to audition a decoder/receiver with this yet? It looks great on paper but how does it actually perform. It's the only reason I can see for upgrading my current setup in the near future.

havnt experinenced it yet, but i hope to. i'd say, from what i've heard, it will be well worth upgrading to.

PowerDVD 4 has it now. Might give it a go when I get back, but methinks the PC won't be the best test base to use.

my receiver has it alright (marantz sr4200), i haven't read up on what extra it offers, but compared to pro-logic its quite good.

I only tend to use prologic2 with the tuner or the tv though... i.e. a stereo source im not overly concerned about.

basically in this form it isolates the centre channel quite well, but the rears sound roughly like 20%-40% (volume wise) of the fronts, as said above its good for casual listening or watching tv.
don't think i'd ever use it instead of normal stereo for cd audio..
nor instead of DTS, why change from a true discrete format to a semi-matrixed form of 5.1*? it just doesnt sound right with T2 damnit.

*wouldn't mind a link to a proper technical explanation of dpl2, thats just my assumption of it.. in fact screw it i'll go look now....

Syn-Boy , DPL 2 is not a new format in itself, just a better way of decoding older Stereo and Dolby Prologic soundtracks. As Kali said the rear speakers are matrixed, ie. they are formed from encoded signals in the front stereo mix. So, they are nowhere near as accurate as proper 'discrete' 5.1 channels (Where the rears have their own independant channels). In DPL1 the rears were mono, so you don't really get full surround, more like a triangle whose apex is between the 2 rear speakers, also the frequencies were very limited due to the need to have all 4 speakers (2front, 1center, effectively 1 rear) in one stereo mix, ~7Khz I think.
DPL2 decodes the same signals into Stereo for the rears, and I presume boosts the frequency response and generally does a better job of it.

Its not so much a critical component these days as a very nice enhancement on older soundtracks.

    Cheers for the info/oppinions Kali

I've orderd a marantz sr7200 and hope to have it in a week or so:)
_CreeD_ You have explained Dpl 2 very well.
It's main advantage is what it does to "old" non DVD 5.1 sound.
It's a sort of halfway house between what you get with DD5.1 from a DVd and ordinary pro logic.

It works wonders with the sound from a digibox :)
