Anyone here into surfing? I'm looking to get into it but don't really have a clue where to start, I'm mostly around the south-west.
How do I get into it?

Lahinch. They rent boards and suits by the hour. Great place to go to get a feel for if you like it. The surf shop is the place, and O'Looneys after for a burger.

Cost is around a fiver for an hour (used to be anyway)
If you prefer to buy your own suit then in Limerick go into Riverdeep MOuntain High and ask for the "cheapest" suits they offer...they keep them in the back on a rack, made in Ireland, good place to start off and they are fine.

If you are gong to Lahinch, be prepared to be turned away by either :
    1 no waves being there
2 surf shop owners only rent out when its "safe" ie: if tide is coming in they will make you wait untill its off the rocks

Stay in the center of the beach by where the lifegaurds chairs are, don't surf up the right side of the beach, very easy to get sept out to sea (only if you venture into the really deep water though)

Check out this site for surf predictions:

Hope this helps! Lahinch was the site of the Surfing World Championships years ago and you will ALWAYS find surfers there.

They no longer rent boards in Lahinch due to Insurance reasons. See the discussion board at www.lahinchsurfshop.com for details. You can also see a photo of the today's swell at that site.

However, they still rent boards and suits out in Castlegregory in Kerry - a nice beach break.

River Deep, Mountain High is a good place to get a board - the BIC 7' 9" boards are the perfect beginners board. They had them the last time I was there.

Try also www.surfingireland.net for other surf stuff.

    ah now thats a shame.

I must pop down to castle gregory sometime. truth be told i havent surfed in a year and the board i got (used, in buy and sell 150 punts) is sittin in the shed collecting cobwebs.

any other surf places that are good?

    Thanks for the replys.
I think I'll just get a board and head out to a few beaches.

Can't really get to lahinch on a regular occasion anyways, I know there are always poeple out in Garretstown and Inchedoney, also I hear Derrynane is pretty good, been there hundreds of times and never seen anybody surfing there...there must be a hidden beach or something.
I'll give castlegregory a shout, next week maybe, is it open all year round?
