    I have an Excel question for the Genius amongst you.
    An excel speadsheet of mine won't open. I get the "This program has performed an illegal operation......"and gives me these usual cryptic details:

    EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in
    module MSO97.DLL at 017f:3070aeac.

    Its got me beat, and I can't get around it.
    Any way of extracting my data?

    Thanks

    Not the most intelligent answer you're going to get but if all you want is the data, why not try opening the xls file in Word? It'll give you the bare data, not the formulas.

    Or if it's not a really new version of Excel, try Suns StarOffice (free download) - MS compatible and it does a good job of opening password-protected files when you've forgotten the pw.

    Aye, its password protected (not forgotten), so Word won't touch it (or quick view), but StarOffice could be a good idea. I think theres a machine down the hall with it, so I'll try there.
    Thanks

    Dont know if it helps but MS Works might be able to open it! I know it can do a whole load of formats

    OKay, Ijust tried it with:
    1. Star Office 5.2 and
    2. 602ProSuite2001 (freeware from software602.com)

    Both are capable of opening Excel files, but both refused as it is a protected worksheet. I have the password but neither would give me the option to enter it or circumvent it. ?

    I have a copy of Works somewhere, suppose I can try that too.
    Thanks.

    Another suggestion is to run a virus checker on it. But to me it just looks like a corrupted file. Have you a back up u can try?

    Comes up clean on Nortons AV Corporate Edition, and [hang head in shame] no backup.
    No sympathy should be given to people without backups is my usual policy, so of course I've been caught out. (There was a unmarked floppy copy that was binned by mistake)

    Thanks for the help though.

    Yet another suggestion is to try older versions of excel. Sometimes if macros are use it can get a bit stroppy. But this will hardly be any use to u if you.ve already used it with a current version.

    At the risk of pointing out the bleedin' opbvious...

    You have tried re-installing Excel, and/or applying any service packs?

    Also - haev you updated any MS software on the machine recently (IE or Windows itself being the obvious culprits)

    When you have issues with word deleting normal.dot can solve it so maybe its something similar... delete the default template? Could also be normal.dot in excel also!

    When you use the IntelliMouse wheel to scroll through a Microsoft Excelworkbook, you may receive the following error message: Excel caused an invalid page fault in module Mso97.dll.
    .
    SOLUTION 1:

    This behavior can occur if the following conditions exist:

    The Excel workbook contains multiple worksheets.
    You freeze a pane in one or more of the worksheets.

    To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

    Click the first worksheet in the Excel workbook.
    On the Window menu, click Unfreeze Panes.
    Repeat steps 1-2 for the remaining worksheets in the workbook.

    Also this.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2Fsupport%2Fwindows%2Ftopics%2Ferrormsg%2Fkbipf%2Easp

    I would of suggested msdn.microsoft.com but the peons in MS have polluted the DB with stupid .NET replies for everything. It's almost impossible to find anything, they turned possibly thier best support database into a pile of poo.

    Book1.XLS is the default Excel template - just FYI.

    1. I have tried opening it on 3 different machines
    (Excel97, Excel2000, ExcelXP)

    2. All 3 machines are still opening other spreadsheets no problem.

    3. Ran a program called Excel Recovery v2.2 and recovered ONE cell (columnAG row14837?) on one worksheet.

    4. Final Conclusion: This file is completely screwed!
    And I think I should devote the few remaining brain cells left to remembering what was in the spreadsheet and trying to reconstruct a new one.

    Thanks Guys.

    ps Tried the Aclutil patch from MS (thanks Hobbes) but it didn't help my file.
    Decided against installing Works Suite to try and open this file, as its a pain to uninstall properly.

    maybe... try opening in word or see if it opens in works.. at least you might be able to get the data if not the formulas

    I tried using Word and it said
    "Cannot convert password protected documents"

    Thanks.

    hmm how about something like

    /*excel_extract.vbs*/
    dim n as object
    dim holder(10)
    dim ct
    dim a
    dim ctx
    set n=CreateObject("Excel.application")
    ct=0
    do
    holder(ct)=n.col("A")(ct)
    holder(ct+1)=n.col("B")(ct)
    //and so on
    ct=ct+10
    redim preserve holder(ct)
    loop while holder(ct-10)<>""

    n.close
    set n=nothing
    ctx=freefile
    open "somefile" for output as #ctx
    for a=0 to ct
    write #ctx,holder(a)
    next a
    /*end*/
    Or something similar?

    TypeDef,

    I appreciate your reply and the time you took to write this, but to be honest, my skills in any programming language are non existent, and I have no idea what to do with this?
