what's dvd-9?

    A mate of mine got some dvd's from Hong Kong recently
    and on the dvd box the dvd logo seems to be different.
    Instead of the usual dvd logo there's a dvd-9 one.
    From a web search it seems to refer to the dvd being double sided - it that what it means?
    Does it mean anything extra in the context of a film dvd?
