Well its the 10th so the old money's gone (except from under the floorboards of cons still in the joy, Liam! ), are you missing the manly weight of proper coins, or the way the old fiver turned to dust in a matter of weeks.

I don't miss the notes but the new coins are just useless, I see
many jam jars full of 1 and 2c pieces stretching into the far future
when they'll be taken to the bank and turned into enough notes to buy a pack of Taytos'.

    Mike.

I donate my change to "pennies from hevean" and what do i get for thanks

    pennies from hell

Would be nice if the one and two cent coins were big enough to see.

and I miss the big funny shaped heavy fifty pence pieces. It felt like you had more than you actually had

I also miss the five pence being silver a brown five cent coin devalues it i think

and before anyone says it i know that 5 cent is worth 4 pence co it really is devalued

its not that i miss it, but i have fond memories when i see the old doll.

    example

today [09 feb], at my place of work, this kid hands me a £10 note. Ah the tenner, worn and torn, irish in every perspective.

Not really but the nw 1c and 2c coins arent good fo throwing purposes and dont make the "clink" sound the irish money did.the 2 euro coin is the way forward.

I think the 50p was the best coin ever, it was big and of course a silly shape which meant you knew it as soon as you saw or felt one. Its worth recalling that its introduction was meet with incredulity.

I wonder why the 50c piece is bigger than the €1? I've also noticed the 2 and 5c are aging very quickly.

    Mike.

Yeah noticed that too! (the coppers ageing quickly that is).

I was rooting through the till n came across a coin which looked really old n crusty, i thought it was a penny, on closer inspection it was a 5c coin!

Only been around a few weeks n lookin real shabby already!

also noticed the 2 and 5c are aging very quickly.

ya same here. much like european union, all shiny at the start, but quickly wears out and becomes dull and lifeless

NO I DON'T MISS THE OLD MONEY AS YET, AS I HAVE NOT
YET STARTED TO GET USED TO THE "FORMALLY NEW" MONEY.
IM NOT SURE IF ANY OF YOU PEOPLE OUT THERE REMEMBER THE
OLD RED TWENTY POUND NOTES AND THE OLD BLUE TWENTY
POUND NOTES, GOD THEY WERE LOVELY AND I STILL HAVE AN AWFUL LOT LEFT OF THEM TO CHANGE.
I ALSO HAVE A LOT OF OLD COINAGE LEFT TO CHANGE
AND BY COINAGE I MEAN THE FINE SHILLING PIECES (PRE 1972 I THINK), I HAVE A FEW BAGS OF THEM TO CHANGE. I SUPPOSE THERES NOT A LOT OF YOU LEFT NOW THAT REMEMBERS THEM.

A LOT OF THE OLD SHILLINGS PIECES I GOT FOR MY FIRST COMMUNION AND MY CONFIRMATION, I WAS MADE UP (RICH) IF I GOT A SHILLING, THAT WAS BACK IN THE EARLY 1930'S.
GOD BE WITH THE DAYS, THEIR ALL DEAD NOW.

Kathleen, as its your first post, you may want to know that USING CAPITAL LETTERS IS NETICATE FOR SHOUTING !!

so dont be shouting all the time, my hearing is sensitive :)

Yes... I remember them... and they're preserved forever on the Central Bank's web site at http://www.centralbank.ie/bseriesoldtwo.html

BTW, about the capitals, what 'Gone Shootin' means is "netiquette", which basically means "Internet Etiquette"... which is, of course, a bunch of archaic quasi-rules placed on people telling them how to behave properly. Capital letters are seen as shouting and are that bit more difficult to read. It might be worth your while giving the Newbie FAQ board a visit.

The old notes and coins looked way better than the Euro notes and coins - tacky pieces of crap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,484 ✭✭✭Gerry

I think the euro notes are fine, as are the 1 and 2 euro coins. The rest of the coins are annoyingly fiddly. Like a few others, I miss the 50p. You could tell how much Irish money you had just by the weight and feel of it. I've emptied out my pockets a few times recently thinking I only had small change in it, only to realise that it was 5 or 6 euro.

Looking at those "b series" notes on the central bank website, I can remember the £20, and very vaguely the 50. They look absolutely class though :)

would miss the pound notes alright you would think you had loads when you had about five of them

then you would have probably gotten more for them then

which brings me to another question

The central bank say that you can change your old money indefenately for euros

so if you have irish money say the blue 20 pound note which would have got you a weeks shopping back in 1982 into the central bank will you get the price of a weeks shopping now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

I suspect you would get €25.39 for it.

    20 pounds is 20 pounds is 25.39 euros :)
