Well,is it?We never really heard any such declaration saying that the Taliban had lost the whole country. Is there any area where they are still in firm control or are they just now a small guerilla force?Strange there was never any official end to the war as such.

I don't mean to be pedantic, Gopher, but officially, the Yanks never declared war on them. Hence, no declaration of it ending.

I recently heard that a black hawk was shot down by a SAM in a mountainous region of Afghanistan but it was probably an isolated incident.

Then again, a squad of American troops did kill twenty odd people in a botched raid on suspected Taliban leaders.

I remember seeing footage of a convoy of jeeps being struck by US missiles a few days ago. The Yanks suspect that there were high ranking Taliban leaders (possibly Osama Bin Laden) in the vehicles but haven't yet been able to land troops to check it out. Which, in my opinion, sounds like a load of bull. They'd land marines on the moon if they thought it would do some good.

If you mean has the Taliban been ousted from power? gopher the answer is Yes.
If you mean has the fighting stopped ?the answer is no,well maybe for a bit.
Afganistan is very unstable as recently as monday the US state department was accussing Iran of destaballising the karzai government and supporting heavy fighting in the paktia and herat Provinces
Since then another ceasefire has been called but it will be some time before it is clear wether karzai can hold the various warlords factions together in a semblence of governance.
There is a legacy of 20 years of infighting between the warlords and many are taking the recent vacumn of power to settle old scores.
