Thinking of making the move from win 98 to win 2k or possibly dual booting with the two of them.
what i want to know though, is it really necessary to dual boot or can i dispense with 98 altogether?
i've read somewhere that u can make 2000 think that its actually 98 or 95 or nt 4.0 but is that facility reliable or was it just an after thought.
getting pretty sick of 98 constantly crashing on me,
any other comments and windows 2000 and its greatness and why i should make the upgrade would be greatly appreciated also.
    thanks

    ps

where can i get a student copy of win 2k for a good price?
and is there a difference between student copies and real copies, or is it just the price?

win2k is not a games OS.. not all games will work, dont know how many times i have read a game readme and then there does be a whole section dedicated to win2k problems... usually to do with NT sound etc.. so in short dual boot it to be safe.. at least if 2k not working for a game you can use 98

It's true to say that Win2k is not always compatible with all games. I use it at home and so far all the games I have tried have worked fine. Make sure you put all the windows updates on, use the lastest video and sound drivers. If you intend to use a lot of old games then keep a dual boot otherwise you should be ok.

Yes Half-life + mods should be grand.. I use Win2K at home for my main PC and as Meglome said, have never had a problem with any of the games I have tried.. Wouldn't want to try running an old version of Transport Tycoon in a hurry tho ;)

Half life, and thier mods are fine....Q3 works grand...

AvP wont work unless you make a change in 2K's system, UT is fine, RA2 is fine and Civ3 works great....

    So I'm happy

Can anyone direct me to a good spot to purchase a student copy of windows 2000?
also, is there a difference between the student version and the normal retail version or is it just the price?

I dual-booted 2K with 98 when I first installed it, but I didn't boot 98 once since, so I got rid of it. I haven't run into any major problems with games, especially anything within the last few years - I could even get all my older games working after a bit of messing around (although with varying reliability).
Keep a DOS boot disk handy if you have a lot of old dos-based games.
AFAIK the student edition is exactly the same, just discounted for penniless student bum types.
