No doubt done before, but a matter of personal curiosity (time to start using a real editor).

And hell, you can't beat a good flame war, eh?

    I said vi.

Had the poll been vi or jed I would have said jed. A 20mb install of Emacs in comparison to a 1-3mb install of jed.....
    Anyhoo

    vi.
I've heard emacs has its uses but I've been using vi ever since I
started doing real work on unix boxes.

    Programming: Vi

Writing a text file/document ... emacs (unless I'm editing a previously written one and looking for specific words or something .. in which case its vi)

Viva las vi! Viva .. viva .. why don't they get a rope and hang meeeeeeeeeeeeeee (apologies .. I've been watching "Good Morning Vietnam" again :D )

God it really ticks me off when people (jed) start ranting and raving sux.gif about (jed) their favorite distro (jed) or editor sux.gif like it was the end all and be all of *nix existance. sux.gif :P

Personally the editor I use depends on what I am doing, and what machine I am on. I've seen some awful installations of Vi on some machines.

For debugging I would use Vi, and it wouldn't cost me a thought.

For simply editing a text document, I would be more likely to use pico or joe.

I don't know how to use emacs, but if I did I would probably use it for textediting, as well as debugging, and define a macro for compiling/executing.

No don't do e during mass.... that's wrong.
Stop using windows and the urge to do such wholely profane things will diminish.

    [snip!]

Mmm... jed with EDT emulation :-)

Sorry... messed with VMS long before Unix, but my fingers started getting tired typing "SET" all the time ;) - still like EDT though...

"Emacs is a great operating system, but it lacks a decent text editor"

    :D

    Vi wins for me.

Especially vim with exuberant syntax hi-lighting enabled.
