God it really ticks me off when people (jed) start ranting and raving about (jed) their favorite distro (jed) or editor like it was the end all and be all of *nix existance. :P

Personally the editor I use depends on what I am doing, and what machine I am on. I've seen some awful installations of Vi on some machines.

For debugging I would use Vi, and it wouldn't cost me a thought.

For simply editing a text document, I would be more likely to use pico or joe.

I don't know how to use emacs, but if I did I would probably use it for textediting, as well as debugging, and define a macro for compiling/executing.
