Anyone know anything about Distributing MSDE. Is it only Run-Time files that are shipped. Is there no... Enterprise Manager Etc that is shipped with it also.

    Thanks in advance

MSDE does not ship with any UI tools. AFAIK, osql, a command-line utility is all that ships with it.

The idea is that a developer uses Access 2000 as the UI tools, or else develops on SQL Server ("proper" edition), and then does a release build which can isntall and set up the MSDE. It is effectively meant to be a runtime database on the client.

Essentially, MS were getting a kicking in the market because their low-end, freely distributable DB engine (Jet) was vastly different to their largescale DB system (SQL Server), whereas Sybase et al had a fully scalable system.

MS offer the MSDE to resolve this, but the redist idea is the same as with JET - you can redistribute JET, but not Access. Similarly, you can redist MSDE, but not the UI tools.
