I'm a microsoft user, allways have been allways will be, but im not the kind of ms user that instintivly hates other os's.

It like to get into unix, or more exact linux. Just so i know were im going.

But its hard to find info and direct links to all the versions of linux out there.

I tried debian,(because i basically wanted to configure firewalls) but would not install it on my pc due to a lack of graphics card support.

So what do i want a sticky for, i think it coudl be a good idea to have a sticky with links to all the version of linux in iso form. and a little write up on what type of user they are aimed at. what type of interface they have (graphic/prompt)

IT would save afew people(maybe not many) form repeatedly asking the same questions over and over again.

    Hello.

Just on that whole graphics card thing, what you should do is try out Mandrake 8.1 as I suspect you were using Debian 2.2_r2 or 2.2_r3 which had XFree86 3.3.6 which is really old, so old in fact that the svga driver I had been using for my voodoo 3 3500 would not work with the new voodoo 4 4500 I bought yesterday. This post skews ot, anyway right now I am ftping XFree 4.1.0 (becuase I don't think I have a new enough glibc for 4.2.0 or something) but the point is that Mandrake probably already has 4.1.0 or even Red_Crap. Ask adam who co-mods msapps/os with you for a copy for Red-Hat, I'm sure he would be more than happy to give you a copy and help setting it up (if you can pull him away from his mirror, rolled up £20 and razor blade long enough).

Else I am in Dublin, I will burn you off Mandrake 8.1 if you like, snot a problem. All so if you need access to partition magic to resize an ntfs file system then I 'could' probably help you out there too.
If I may venture an opinion, i'd say that debian is probably nicht der right distro for your first install, choose Mandrake,Red-Head, or SuSE linux for your first install, in that order of preference, or something.

Im on ADSL, so id grab it off the net long before it would arrive in the post

see thats what i tought about debain at first, but on the system i tried to install it on, its only an elsa tnt 2 card.

Anyway ill give mandrake a try out.

Ive partiton magic 7 pro, comes in very very handy, and it would be what id use to create the partition.

If a problem with installing debain on my newer system due to raid support, hows mandrake for this

Just one small thing: it is a good idea to use PM to do the partitioning but it will create an ext2 partition. If i were you i would change it to reiserfs during install.

To see why check out the thread at: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=40353

also linux.org and linux.com are great places to start with linux. and desktoplinux.com
