lol yeah I started downloading it in work yesterday morning must burn t to cd now. Hopefully they've fixed alot of the issues which arose in 4.4 making for a friendlier install.

It might be quicker but connecting for hours on an unrealible 56k connect and paying cash to eircom isn't everyones idea of fun ;)

Hmm... I cvsuped from 4.4-REL (+2weeks) to 4.5-RC2 in about 25 minutes there a week or two ago.
    Over 56k...

    - Schrodinger, how about this RAMMIT (TM) :P

    hehe.

    - Schro, *someone* not naming names or anything, installed 4.4 on his computer a while back not leaving enough space on /usr so he wants to start from scratch with a 4gig /usr partition :P

    - logic1 :P

seriously since you already downloaded it can i get a copy ?

(will send divx in return hehehe)

Its actually quite quick when you do it from cvsup.ie.freebsd.org even on a "56K" line.

Flamegrill why dont you just reinstall 4.4 and cvsup. :P

If a cvs upgrade will only take 25 minutes over a 56k modem (assuming poster meant download time) then that implys that the difference is not over 5mb in size give or take.... ergo if the change is so small what is the point in updating? Seriously 25 minutes worth of downloading over a 56k modem seems like not enough of a difference to bring out a new release doesn't it? So either the FreeBSD guys have made a new release for the sheer fun of it, or there must be more to dload then 25 mins of cvs stuff??

/Tis the season to be trolling , troll lol lol lol lol, lol lol lol lol\

Well I'm assuming that most src wouldnt really be that large, considering it is just text after all and doesnt need to be that big. So downloading it doesnt exactly require a very fast connection depending on how much src you need.

Whats the compressed size of linux-2.4.16.tar.bz2 ?
    21mb give or take?
hmmm, strange to release an entire iso's worth of releases if the only difference is less in size than the compressed source of linux, wouldn't people think?

    I dunno.
Oh wait, it just came to me in a flash of logic.

    SLACKWARE WORKS
    phew.... almost forgot.

All I'm saying is that it would just be quicker to reinstall 4.4 and then cvsup rather than having to wait for the cd to arrive in the mail which could take days where as a reinstall and update of the src would take just a nite.

note to typedef: 4.4 stable - 4.5 release or 4.4 release to 4.5 stable? some of us keep up to date. shouldn't you? :)

    umm maybe i should
<rest of rant delted, for political correctness :D >

suppose it depends on what your situation is.

If you have a machine you want to install a fresh copy of freebsd on then the iso is what you want.

But if you're just updating a box you're using at the moment, cvsup is the best thing; takes less than 10 mins to get all the srcs if you track the stable tree on a regular basis.

The only issue is that it can take quite a while to do the buildworld if you're on a slow machine.

I burned that for you flame. I'll mail it down monday ;)

5 Megs of compressed source code diffs is quite a lot (plain text compressing more than most formats). Where you to download updated binaries instead it'd probably be closer to 100 megs

Linux kernel diffs are usually 800K or so, quite a difference from the 26 meg for the full kernel
