They were there 4 years ago as well, and as far as I remember they didn't embarrass themselves. Finished around 35th out of 50 or so.

Like many other Irish athletes, I would guess they're not based in Ireland, or at the very least train abroad...

Or possibly in the sand dunes in Brittas Bay...
    :D

    Movie titles:
#1: The green team - When Leprachauns attack
#2: The Poseiden Salt Lake Disaster
#3: Avalanche - The Real Story

They are all 'normal' athletes as far as I know, several of the last team were there at the last summer games too..Terry McCaugh <sp?> for example..

cant find word of an Irish team for this one anywhere

Yeah, I went looking for information...
    Very little available!

    Here's what I found:

A news item about a winery creating a commemorative wine case to promote theIrish Olympic bobsleigh team! Article here: http://www.chateaudesours.com/news.asp

This guy may or may not be on the team : http://www.bobsleigh.com/Athletes/Bobsleigh/b_irl.html

There seems to be an Irish womens team: http://www.examiner.ie/nuapublish/np/NP/WPBTool/WPBWebPageH/supplements/Arena/Full_Story?did=sgx3IssGzK6Z6

and finally, details of the Irish Bobsleigh & Luge Association:

    Irish bobsleigh?

    What next? Irish ski-jumpers?

Isnt it funny, that for years Eddie The Eagle was laughed at for taking part in ski-jumping (cause he was crap) but the Jamaicans were lauded for having the balls to put a bob team together (who were also crap).

I'm looking forward to the winter Olympics. Good coverage on Eurosport, some great events, and very few competitions where the winner is almost a foregone conclusion.

If you like winter sports, it should be great.

A couple of years ago I went down the bobsleigh track in Sigulda, Latvia.

It's not a real one that they send you down in though. It's a foam bob like shaped box with plastic guttering for the runners and they squeeze about 5 of you into it and give you a gentle push. Looks a bit odd when you first set eyes on it though but by the time you reach the first corners your going plenty fast enough to be terrifiedf of the speeds that you are doing, we had several runs down in that each.

A couple of us then also managed to pay extra to go down in a proper 3 man bob afterwards with one of the Latvian team driving, my mate was then working the brakes. Going down in the fake one was scarily fast, this one was actually opproaching painful on the going round the corners from the g-forces and there was no run up before we went over the edge.

Here is a video of us going down in the fake one:
