People who expect people to serve them

Something that annoys me a lot.

When I'm walking through a door, and I see someone coming, I'll hold the door open for them. Most people thank me for it (which is nice, but not necessary) and others don't. A small part of the latter group also just fail to recognise my existence.

    I mean, it's not like I'm inconspicuous. I'm 6'6". There's only two reasons I can think of.

    1) They're scared of me, or I make them uncomfortable
    2) They expect me to serve them

    So what's up?

hell i just slam it in there face, and walk off, im not there to serve them, and if they are in so much of a day dream they cant put out their hand an catch a door, then well i guess they will be awake after it hits them right between the eyes

Yeah, I have to say, if you work in a shop, you'll know what its like to be treated like shít
The customers asking you "hor much is this" you run off as fast as you can to get the price - come back partly breathless, and they grab the thing out of you hands, "I suppose I'll take it" and you're left there just thinking to yourself, "I'm just after running half a mile to find the fúcking price of a product and the customer grabs the thing out of my hand and doens't even have manors" another thing that can piss me off is when they don't even want it and just say "that's too dear" and walk off
Some people need a good slap in the fúcking face these days.

As about you thin JustHalf, I sometimes do that, its really annoying when the people just blank you for waiting for a few seconds of your life to hold open the door for them, thing is, if you're stillahead of them, just walk really slow up some stairs and if there's another door, close i behid you really fast without a word, :)

Some people are just rude and self centred. Period.

LOL- youd be lucky if they actually bought the thing after you checked the price. I just gave up and started making guesses cos I was sick of having idiots ask me stuff :P Worked like a charm too.

You should always let people thank you. "Manners" is a two way thing - hence our language is designed with 'response terms' to polite statements.

Unfortunately, lots of people haven't copped on to the whole notion that manners is a two way thing. I'd always thank someone who held the door for me. I'd also think someone was rude if they let it slam back in my face.

The next time someone ungraciously breezes past you, try roaring "YOU'RE VERY WELCOME" at them.

(If that doesn't work, kick em inna nuts.)

I think the trick is to make eye contact - it makes people feel guilty when they then don't say "thank you". If they don't make eye (or verbal) contact, don't hold the door. However, if you want something off that person (boss, chick in shop), use it as an intro - force them to recognise you are there (block the door 'accidentally' if you have to).

Personally, I hate it when people try to hold the doors in Easons (O'Connell St.) open for you (there are about 6 double doors together). If someone holds the door open, it is difficult to get past them and through the door. So I aim for one door away from the other person. Also with double swing doors (and again Easons coms to mind), it can be rude to hold the door. If you leave it flap, the other person can time their steps so the door is swinging away from them when they go through it.

Of course, the real question is: how long should you stand there holding the door open for someone? Not long enough and you risk it swinging back in their face. Too long and you look like a stalker fishing for interaction with some human, any human.

I think about this way too much. Sometimes if I'm going through a swing door I give it an extra push so someone coming the other way will have time to duck through. And of course there's a totally different type of door-holding, when you're walking with someone and you get to the door first and hold it open for the other one. I think men are generally supposed to do this for women (or at least it won't be remarked upon if a man always does it for women) but if a guy is walking with a guy he only has to do it when approaching a door from a particular side - do it both sides and you're definitely a predatory homosexual. :)

    Like I said, I way over-analyse this.

well i was in EB world, and i was looking at a few games, i got one and brought it over to my mate and walked straght infront of this big red guy, who was standing about a foot away from the games lookign at them. So im standing there talkign to my mate. and i hear this refined english accent

"excuss me but why are you standing in front of me"
    "im talking to my mate"
    "Pure fuking ignorance then"
"yes, you will get used to it when you in dublin awhile"

    and then i walked off.

Boston will never know that I suspected (correctly as it turns out) he was that ignorant.

Nice one Boston, you're the kind of fukwit I hate.

Some bitter resentment towards foreigners (espescially Brits?) and a tea spoon of manners...

Stand in front of me in a games shop, sunshine, and I wouldn't be so polite.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

All the guy had to do was say excuse we, and i would have moved out of his way no problem, but instead he gave me atitude and started to swear at me, i didnt realize at the time he was looking at the games, because he was a fair destance away from them,

"Stand in front of me in a games shop, sunshine, and I wouldn't be so polite." or you will do what exactly, explain what you mean by this, it should prove interesting

BTW dont call me a fukwit

    I'll field this one,

The context of "Excuse me" wasn't to get out of the way, it was to draw attention that he was speaking to him (British thing). Or he could of just farted and was warning him then wondering why he was standing their near the smell.

I believe the correct phrase should of been "Excuse me please".

I just hold the door open for anyone who is coming (within a reasonable distance). Doesn't matter what gender. I'm just doing it to be nice to people.

And I don't mind not being thanked. It's just the way some people just ignore that I've held the door open for them. They never even look at me.

That's what gets me, as it makes me feel as though they expect me to serve them.

My reply (and I TOTALLY identify and agree with Justhalf)
is to shout after them in my loudest sarcastic voice:

"No no dont mention it.... oh thats right... you didn't !!"

Worked in, oh yeah starting to work again in, the service industry... never really had any problem!

I'd always hold a door for someone, no matter what they look like ;) Always say thanks if someone holds it for me... generally i find most ppl say thanks anyway *shrug* maybe i just look like a person you don't want to get upset ;):D

I don't often hold the door wide open for people when I'm going in somewhere (though I do hold the door open for buggies, carry them down stairs, that kind of thing)

Why? Don't want to get in the bloody way. Usually I just give it that extra push so the door is still a bit open when people are on their way out or in. People appreciate the gesture (so do I) - pointless actually making it more difficult for them to get in.

If the setup of the door (hey, I'm making it look like a science) allows for me to hold the door open without actually getting in the way, I hold it open. Most people say thanks, others do that head gesture thing that means thanks. Some just don't - so what - they're the same hoores that make no effort to keep the door open for me - but a lot of people do.
