Unlike other distros, Gentoo Linux has an advanced package management system called Portage. Portage is a true ports system in the tradition of BSD ports, but is Python-based and sports a number of advanced features including dependencies, fine-grained package management, "fake" (OpenBSD-style) installs, safe unmerging, system profiles, virtual packages, config file management, and more.

    Uh, hello? RPM? dpkg?

Yeah, binary package menagers, Portage builds from source similar to BSD ports.
Some people (Like Me) actually prefear that.

Just amoi, people like dahamsta and Typedef seem to have multiple distro's in their possession. As a n00bie, I'm confused. Do you use all of these distros on one/many computers or do you just have them for sentimental value? :)

I guess I just like playing with my pc, also curious /shrug\.

    /dev/hda1 - Windows XP(soon to be 2k) /evil cackel.
/dev/hda2 - Maybe put GNU Hurd here
    /dev/hda3 - Slackware 8.0
    /dev/hda4 - Debian 2.2 r2
    /dev/hdb1 - Solaris 8.0
    /dev/hdb2 - OpenBSD 3.0 posting /chuffed hehe [ii]
    /dev/hdb3 - FreeBSD 4.4
    /dev/hdb4 - mp3 space
/dev/hdb5 - Maybe put QNX here

    _Slackware increases your IQ.
[ii] Chicks dig OpenBSD. Had to swap the mp3 und OpenBSD partitions to get around 'bad magic' error on boot tho, which could have been alot less pain in the arse

    Oh and I forgot.

Oh and, I use Slackware 7.1 to resurrect 386/486 boxes, like the 386 which serves as a dhcp server and internet portal for the mother's XP/Mandrake pc and XP laptop and my above, and the fahter's p120 in my room for the moment which might be turned into an SQL server so that I can play with SQL and php, but ostensibly will go back to functioning as a desktop with a 486 similar to the 386 above working as another dhcp/internet portal, tho said 486 will probably have samba and maybe even nfs (if i can get a hdd slave working on it's prehistoric ide controller), umm and lets say that when I get new versions of windows it is cheaper(free) to get my dvd/cdrw working then it would be in windows(ie paying over money) and not speak furher of that.

    Linux Torvalds would be proud.

You're not obsessive or anything, are you?

    Good stuff, keep it up.

Sentimental value mostly. I always run Red Hat on my local and remote servers, and when I'm using Linux on my workstation, it tends to be Red Hat or Mandrake. OpenBSD is for gateways and firewalls. Everything else comes from a cover CD, a friend, or just comes bundled with something.

Except Corel, which I just take out to look at on dark and depressing mornings. We all need a good laugh every now and then.

Well I like to have a gander at what different distro's are like from time to time.
They are always adding new things and different distro's do things different ways.

And sure you should keep yourself fairly abrest of how they all work,
you never know what sort of weirdness your going to run into out on site....
