Unfortunately it's not true at the moment.

However you can currently get buy a second digibox with a quatro lnb and a mirror subscription (costs around £10 sterling per month) for the channels you already have, but it's only available in the UK at present.

The feeling is that Sky will introduce it to Ireland in the first six months of this year. Until then you're stuck with the channel you're watching (unless you're prepared to pay full cost for a second digibox and full price second subscription).

The "magic eye" you are referring to is a component of the "digi sender" system.

The digisender is an rf transmitter/receiver system which will send the output of the scart socket on your digibox to another TV in the house (eg. bedroom) without the need for cabling, you just have a small set-top box (RF receiver, which plugs into the scart socket) on whichever other TV you want to watch Sky on.
It can also be used for DVD players and video recorders.

The magic eye part is what sends the signal from your remote control to the digibox through the digisender.

This is something that I am looking for. Where can you get one of these 'Magic Eyes' and how much do they cost?

There are two things being discussed here.

The first is the TV Link which is a Sky product. This uses the 2nd RF output from the digibox and connects to a little box at the back of your second TV. There is an infra-red receiver connected to this box which relays the remote control signals back to the box (through the co-ax cable). This product will not send a stereo signal on the satellite channel (terrestrials will be stereo) and there must not be any breaks in the cable as a 9v signal is used. You can get it through Sky or some independant retailers. Of course we all recommend http://irelands-satellite.safeshopper.com/4/cat4.htm?520

The second product is a digital sender. This uses a transmitter and receiver arrangement to send and receive the signals from one room to another. This sends stereo signals and will also work for DVD players and videos. For more details see http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/commerce/command/ExecMacro/ols_prod_detl.d2w/report?prrfnbr=5351637&prmenbr=6970&type=big&thisMode=ols&cgrfnbr=66354

Thanks Shane, what do you make of the 'Digilink' listed at http://www.satcure.com/accs/page3.htm

It seems alot cheaper than the £79stg that you would have to pay with the Argos option you posted.

The digilink seems to be the same thing as the TV Link which I mentioned above. GBP£19.95 is €32.66 and there is no second remote control included. A tv-link and Sky remote for €30.69 would seem to be unbeatable. See the first link that I posted.

I wonder if Tony thinks that this forum is better than the Golden Pages? :D

What about the Powermid XL on the same page, I already emailed Tony earlier today but unfortunately he doesn't for a wireless solution which I am looking for.

I am not so sure my landlord would like me drilling holes and running cables all over the place. It was a hard enough job in the first place convincing him to get the Sky because of same.

The Eircom Store on 'buy4now' has one but E159 seems a bit steep.

    Link as follows :

    http://www.buy4now.ie/eircomstore/shopping/index1.asp?SearchDescription=One%20for%20all&iSearch=YES

They have one on display in the Blanchardstown store - very neat looking device - 1 tv at back of store sending signal to other at front - didn't see any difference in the picture.

I am sure that this device is available from Argos as well as the Digisender which you might want to look at as well

(Note: Powermid does not transmit picture or sound. It sends a remote control signals only).

If you are looking at a wireless solution you will probably have to fork out around the €159.

Remember this does not allow you to watch two seperate digital channels at the one time.

I use the OneForAll A/V Sender, and have found it to be first class (if a little pricey). It allows you to remote control and send the A/V of any device you like (e.g. DVD player, Video, Stereo, Camcorder, Sat Receiver etc..)

I sure do Shane, Golden pages costs a lot of money :-) Unfortunatey I am down to my last few tv link/remote packages at this price, my supplier has increased the price by 30%. I do not sell wireless units because we had a very high return rate because of dissatisfaction with picture quality and there is always the danger that a neighbour is using one on the same freq.

    Thanks for your kind words.

I may be asking for too much here but could I get a second receiver that could acceptf the same signal from the transmitter for a third TV? Or would I have to purchase two full sets?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,092 ✭✭✭ShaneOC

According to Argos you can get one with two receivers. Do a search for digital senders and you should find it.

Tony, any reviews I have read say that there is a switch on the back to select 1 of 4 freqs so neighbour interference should not be an issue (or interference with cordless phones).

Just found that you can buy additional receivers @ http://www.buy.digisender.com/ for the digisender solution that Argos is selling.

Will argos.co.uk deliver to Ireland ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,092 ✭✭✭ShaneOC

They probably would but I think you would be better off getting it here just incase something goes wrong. There's an Argos in Limerick isn't there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,550 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

Yes, my unit has a five frequency selector.
Additionally, you can have either as many senders or receivers as you like.

With multiple senders you can either select the channel you want to watch using the five different frequencies, or you can automatically switch between sender signals (every 5 seconds).
Useful as a security solution, I guess..

Wow, now I think of it, you could time-share your satellite dish with your neighbour! Or lend them your signal when you're away on holidays, if you're feeling generous!
    :)

Yes there is Shane, I must have a look at the catalogue this evening to see if the digisender is avaible in the ROI version.

Tony - There are umteen reviews on this 'Digisender' from AEISecurity praising it's reliability. If I was you I might look into it. They seem to only supply directly to distributors so that might be just you for the irish market.

Thanks for the info I'll look into this. Does anybody happen to know the legal situation of these devices, are they licience exempt?

    Thanks Tony

Yes - it is in the new Argos Catalog -

They also give a price for base + single remote station and base + two remote stations which wasn't in the old catalog.

    Tony,

As far as I know, the EU has decreed that the 2.4Ghz frequency on which these devices operate has to be made free for use (as the same frequency has been liberalised in the USA). Whether or not this has become legislation in Ireland or not at the minute, I am not sure of. However, as an EU regulation it must come into law at some point - the government may get away with delaying it, but they cannot ignore it.

The same frequency is intended for use in other 'lite' wireless applications - such as baby monitors, LAN applications, etc.

Furthermore, and in evidence of legislation, eircom, Argos, etc sell equipment for using this frequency, along with all major IT solutions providers - so it 'must' be legal, then ..... !!

I think it has the potential to be a winning product, as I've said in these boards before.

I purchased the digisender from Argos just before Christmas for 99 Euro, I think (here in Ireland). I works a treat. It is completely wireless, and as some people have said, uses the 2.4Ghz band with four switches on it to select different channels so you don't interfere with your neighbours. There is an ever-so-slight degradation in picture quality, but this is made up for the fact that you can plug something into the second scart connection on the Sky Digibox and watch that upstairs too! You can, of course, change channels on the Sky box using your remote upstairs.

If you "suffer" from falling asleep infront of the television, this gadget is the ideal cure.

    TD.
