    Northern Ireland gets ITV2

    Wednesday January 23, 2002

ITV2 is to become available to digital terrestrial viewers in Northern Ireland for the first time as the result of a deal between UTV, Carlton and Granada.

The digital channel will begin broadcasting in Northern Ireland on Friday, replacing UTV2.

The moves comes after Carlton and Granada, the two biggest ITV companies, agreed to compensate UTV, the Northern Ireland licensee, for the use of the ITV brand to promote ITV Digital and ITV Sport.

The settlement with UTV also clears the way for ITV Sport to launch on digital terrestrial TV in Northern Ireland.

ITV2 became available to Scottish digital terrestrial viewers last July, after Carlton and Granada struck a similar deal with Scottish ITV, which owns SMG.

However, Carlton and Granada have yet to reach an agreement with the remaining independent company in the network, Channel TV.

MMMMMMM ..... I wonder did the deal also cover ROI - I know there has been discussion on here that politics within the 'ITV' franchises may have a bearing on whether UTV goes on the Irish EPG.

It would seem silly to ignore this issue if they had been negotiating for six months longer than Scotland, wouldn't it?

Was ITV 2 , what N.I Sky subscribers got?
and does this mean ITV 1 branding on UTV for ever and ever now?
The latter part would be sad:(

ITV 2 was always there for Sky NI customers, UTV2 never made it to satellite.

UTV pres will survive, dont worry. STV and Grampian pres still exist, independent of what ITV do. And the trailers on STV and Grampian dont have ITV1 end boards, so UTV's ickle trailer department is safe, dont fret!

It might hasten an arrival of UTV on the EPG, remember what was said on the other thread.....

    We await developments!
