I need to know, as quickly as possible for a project, how to partition a harddisk which has MSwindows on it at the minute so that it will have LINUX and Windows.

Is it necessary to format the disk from scratch?

I've only ever loaded the LINUX O/S a few times before on a single boot drive so I'm new to this.

    Help Appreciated!!!

You will have problems dual booting, and sometimes windows get picky about linuxs partitons.
basically from windwos end you want something like partition magic.

now to actaully get it to work is a linux question, which is were im moving this to.

That really depends on what version on Windows you are running. If you are running NT/2k/xp then you will have to use Partition Magic, If however you are using 9x/me, then you can follow in the spirit of linux(ie open source) and use FIPS, It comes along with most distros, but if you don't have it I'm sure a google can tell you where to get it.

I'm in the midst of this myself.I got a link to the guide below off a mate, it's aimed at people installing Linux alongside an existing install of Windows:
Multibooting Linux and Windows. The pages aren't totally complete, but there's enough there to get you going. It doesn't have a guide for the actual partitioning process, but has plenty of other useful info.

To preserve your Windows partition, you'll have to use a utility such as Partition Magic or start from scratch and format, setup partitions and then install both Linux and Windows, plus a boot manager so you can switch between the two.If you're gonna use something like Partition Magic to resize/make new partitions, make sure to backup your data beforehand.

Have you looked at Linux Mandrake?
If you are just beginning and you have a nice fat 32 windoze partition that you would like to resize then you could use the Mandrake 'disdrake' to resize that fat32 partition via the install gui, pretty sweet if you are into easy (and free) repartitioning without data loss on the resized partition.

A few things to note, you should probably defragment the fat32 partition or ntfs(if you have part_magic) so that if there is data at the end of the partiton it gets it's offset readjusted (or something). I believe there is another utility called the diskdruid which comes with that other rpm based distro, Red-Hat linux or as it is quilocially know Red-Head linux, linux for Red-Heads.

Also if you require and are in Dublin I will resize an ntfs partition with pm if need be.

Ti-i-ime is on my side... yes it is
