yes cou can use a TA or analog, though analog is a bit to slow to be of use, no you can get by without the hardrive, the smoothwall cd writes to the hard drive when you boot of the setup cd, you dont need the cd drive once your setup, the spec is fine, ive a similar machine on 1024k connection with transparent proxying turned on and the load is so small it's negligable.
