A friend of mine just got this reply from RTE:

    *************************************
    Dear Paul
There will be no free to air SKY cards in the Republic. The only way to receive RTE 1, Network 2 and TG4 through SKY Digital is by subscription in any part of Ireland.

    Many thanks.

    Regards
    Tom McCarthy
Head of Viewer Information & Technical Publicity
    *************************************

I assume that RTE will be part of the SKY family package, and not some extortionately priced movie deal.

hmmm...sounds like a rip-off of Irish viewers again....I mean, personally I could live without all 3 channels but to have to pay a licence fee AND (probably) an increased Sky subscription charge for the "pleaasure" of getting RTE is not a good way for them to increase their viewer base in my opinion..I mean, our UK counterparts get their (license funded) channels FTA/TFV but over here we have to pay for ours??? Second-class subscriber syndrome again methinks :(

Dunno about that. Isn't it the case that the Beeb and ITV pay for the service to Sky?

RTE are getting it *free* - the only way Sky will get some income out of it is to insist that at least the viewer subscribes to some package..

Well, if you want RTE on any cable system, you have to 'subscribe', and this may be the reason - wouldn't the others kick up if RTE was free.

Besides RTE remains Free to Air - just stick up an aerial!

I suspect, the reason there might be no ftv card for RTE is to cut down on boxes/cards"illegally" moving to the UK for people to receive montrose.
    sky are learning:rolleyes:

On Chorus cable in Cork, RTE, TV3 and TG4 are all required to be broadcast unscrambled.

For added value chorus include free ghosting on all of their channels  This obviously requires lots of extra bandwidth so they have to strip out any stereo signal that might be wasting it. God knows that nobody in their right mind would want to watch TV with Nicam stereo.

Is this the first time the words "For Added Value" and Chorus" have appeared in the same sentence?

    And what's "Ghosting"?

    oooh that spooky feeling....

I cant put it any better, an exact explaination from the BBC, no less.....

"Ghosting is when you see a double image. The TV signal bounces off a nearby object (e.g. a hill, tall building or crane) or shiny surface (e.g. the sea) creating a delayed "double signal". It can also happen if weather conditions let you receive other signals which are usually too far away. Whatever the cause, ghosting is usually improved or solved by changing to a better directional aerial."

And who am I to argue with the Beeb?

Beats me how you get ghosting on a cable system.... :p

    Damien.

Sorry, replied to the wrong quote.

Ditto NTL MMDS - RTE, TV3 unscrambled, I can watch them on my decoder even when they scramble all the other channels for no aparent reason.

I wonder if RTE channels will still work on expired ROI Sky subscription cards?
