Hmmm, easy when you know how....No reason to slag the guy. If you're used to Win9x It'd be easy to get a wee bit confused at first.

    Yah, true true...
But after using win2k for a while, I decided (when I went back to w98) to make a cmd.bat (pointing to command.com).
It's just so damn nice smile.gif

as a follow up question to this..

To what extent does win2k rely on dos, I had heard they were completly separate, is this true?

What I need to do is to set up paths for some compilers I have on the pc, tried putting the statement in autoexec.bat and it didnt work.

    AFAIK, it's a fully 32-bit OS and won't support dos/16-bit drivers.
Also I think environment variables are set within Win2k itself.
But then I know sodd all about Win2k or NT, so anyone feel free to correct me.

You could still force NT at least to use the Path line from the Autoexec.Bat - again I don't know if it's made it into Win2k, might give it a try though...

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
    set ParseAutoExec = 1

Right in NT4 it is done as follows
    Settings/Control Panel/System/Environment
Then go to the Path variable and ad your path. Should be about the same for 2k but I dont know for sure.

    It's not there with win2k smart **** rolleyes.gif

I don't see why its missing on your win2k as its there on all our win2k machines. just goto run and type cmd or you can always create a short cut to it yourself.

The command prompt in Win2k isn't a DOS Prompt; there is no DOS in Win2k, as it's an NT kernel operating system. It's just a command line way of doing things, is all. The command syntax is rather odd compared to DOS as well, although most old DOS commands will work.

oh yes it is. its easy if you open your eyes
maybe you need to install a few win2k components or womething, try looking in the add/remove programs yokie

anyway, is it a dos prompt, which you originally was looking for, or actual dos?

What versi0on of Win2k is it?

Kinda messes your head up when you're in a hurry and forget that Start>Programs>Accesoires>Command prompt only opens a kinda "virtual" DOS.
Had it a while back when I needed to transfer files from one machine to another with a laplink cable. Was using Fastlynx and the session on my Win2k machine kept dropping the connection. After umpteen bloody retries, finally figured it was because it was not running a real DOS session.
Solution was to boot uo the machine from an old Win95 bootflop and go straight into DOS.
    Worked wonders.....
