    Remove Windows Messenger (Home)
There have been a few ways people have suggested to do this. This one seems easy and worked for me. It is supposed to work on home and pro version:

    Start, run

    "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"

    Reboot.

If you're running Pro, you can use GPEDIT.MSC to prevent Messenger from loading. Otherwise, even disabling it in startup won't cause it to "always" not run. Outlook, OE and some MS web pages can still make it load.

    1) Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC
    2) For "per machine" restriction, go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Messenger
For "per user" restriction, go to User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Messenger
    3) You can now modify whether it starts initially and/or whether its to run at all.

Note: Outlook and Outlook Express will take longer to open, unless you turn off Messenger Support. In Outlook Express its in Tools, Options, General tab. In Outlook its in Tools, Options, Other.

A couple of point to add to this...

The option to log on to windows messanger doesnt appear once you have used gpedit.msc..so you are stuck with long load up time for outlook...however...is easier way...

1)In Outlook express /tools/accounts...untick "Automatically log on to messanger"

2)Again in Outlook express /tools/messanger/options/preferances ..untick "Run this program when windows starts"

    More easy i feel.

Not near an XP/Win2k machine so this may be a bit vague... Find the SYSOC.INF file and remove 'HIDE" for any entries you want to be able to see in Windows own add/remove section (Leave the extra "," Just take out the letters HIDE only). Reboot and the previously hidden components (including Messenger) will now show up in Add/Remove Programs - Windows Setup to allow for easy removal.

Of course usual rules apply, backup the file before modifying it.
