RTÉ One Branding...

Watching the TV40 stuff over the new year reminded me of how strong the St. Brigid's cross branding used by RTÉ was.

Nowadays the St. Brigid's Cross is only aired on one RTÉ One ident, otherwise you would never see it.

I've felt for a long time that RTÉ should feature the St. Brigid's Cross in all the RTÉ One idents, not out of any religious reasons (I am an agnostic, anyway) but because the RTÉ One brand is much the weaker without it.

The St. Brigid's Cross is as much a symbol of RTÉ as the CBS Eye and the BBC 1 globe is of their respective broadcasters.

    What do you all think?

Would agree with you there about the strong image.

However now that RTE are looking to Ulster for audience share they probably dropped the cross because of its religious connotations.

As much as the St. Brigid's Cross is thee symbol of RTÉ, I dont think it will reappear. In the same way that UTV dropped the Ulster Television name, to focus more on the south, I feel that the Brigid's Cross, as Terminator has said, because of it can be seen as a Catholic religious symbol. I wonder what the church think of the lack of the St. Brigid's Cross?

The Angelus is still there, why not the Cross??

Now, TV40, they did a nice touch when they had a "proper closedown" at the end of the nostalgic evening. Themla doing her Oiche Mhaith, and then into the anthem.

I think the anthem should return. I love RTÉ's orchestral arrangement of the anthem, a very uplifting version. Now I'm sure RTÉ can do that after the Late News, weather and Prayer at Bedtime, a natural junction. I see that the politicians are lobbying the BBC to bring back the anthem on BBC 1, why not RTÉ 1?

i agree with that. when the national anthem was played on RTÉ it had a wonderful orchestral sound to it. they should bring it back IMO

The National anthem is still played after many late night events down here in the Sticks.

When 2FM was 21,I remember,I think it was Larry Gogan being interviewed and saying that back when "radio two" first started, there was a BIG argument as to whether the Angelus should be on it!

Regarding the St Brigid's Cross: I think it's a pity its being used less and less.
Lately it has been so well blended into the Ident, that I doubt if Unionists watching would know what it was or associate it with anything Catholic.

I remember HTV before, 24/7 tv closed down with a rousing Welsh anthem and flag, and then the Union Jack and God Save herself.

Every pub/nightclub in Athlone plays it at kicking out time. It was a real surprise to hear it because I wasn't used to hearing anything similar at home.

Radio 4 do play the National Anthem just before they hand over to the World Service. Radio Ulster are taking the R4 feed at this time of the night so they take it too.

I think both the British and and Irish NAs are very stirring pieces of music IMHO and I think they should be played more often.

The only problem with re-adopting the St. Brigid's cross is that it's a religious symbol. I don't think it's either politically correct or acceptable for a state-funded organisation to use a Christian symbol, or any other religious symbols.

The state can't muddle religion with state - that's in the constitution. Some other decent symbol or logo should be found - afterall, BBC doesn't even have an image of the Queen!

I also agree that the national anthem should be brought back. Maybe play it around 11 or midnight

Can you imagine the reaction of Mr. Paisley & Co. in Northern Ireland, if RTE began broadcasting the national Anthem shortly after its channels were launched on Sky Digital there.
I can imagine the Ulster Says NO banners will begin to take on a new meaning : NO To the Irish National Anthem.:D
