UCI Coolock Problem

Last night my mother and my sister went to see Lord of the Rings in UCI Coolock. They went to the 8:30pm showing on a Wednesday.

My sister went up to buy two tickets, one for my mother and one for herself. My sister is a full time student in DCU. She took out her student card and asked for one adult ticket and one student ticket for Lord of the Rings.

The cashier said "I can't give you a student ticket as the student discount has been suspended for Lord of the Rings". My sister said "Why?" and the cashier said "Well because lots of people are going to see it." My sister argued that a student discount should be available but the cashier said no and charged her the adult price.

My sister went back to my mother and explained what happened. My mother happened to be standing beside a large A3 poster on the wall that said "Student discount 24 hours a day, 7 days a week" or something along those lines, indicating that a student discount would always be available from UCI and they were actually advertising this fact.

My mother went back to the cashier, pointed to the poster that was clearly viewable from where they both were and asked for a student discount ticket instead of an adult ticket for my sister, the student. The cashier said "No, student discounts have been suspended for Lord of the Rings". My mother asked to speak to a manager and the cashier said "The manager is busy right now." My mother asked for the manager's phone number and the cashier got kind of nervous and called over some other dude that was not the manager, but in charge of the cashier.

My mother explained the situation, the new dude (who I'll call the attendant) started mumbling and asked to see my sister's student card and asked "Are you a *full time* student?" and said "What college are you in?" and mumbled a bit more, and went back and argued with the cashier for a bit and then refunded my sister the difference.

Has this happened to anybody else in UCI Coolock, or any UCI, or any other cinema?

    -Son of Blam

The act of purchasing a cinema ticket is merely an "invitation to treat", wherein the provider can change the terms and conditions as they see fit. However, it does sound like some false advertising and possibly you should contact Consumer Affairs :)

We got a business man here, eh? :)

BTW, you sister was not entitled to *any* discount at all, at the end of the day, tis up to the company, your sister made the offer, UCI don't have to accept it, you sister can't get *anything* out of it, but one thing you can do, is what 80p said, which UCI should get in some trouble for :)

well, surly if it was advertised they have an obligation to stand by it. I know all that hullabuluwsa about "its only a suggested price bal bla bla... you have the right to haggle, they have the right to refuse.. bla bla bla.." but if the poster says...
"Student discount 24 hours a day, 7 days a week" or something along those lines

    then thats a differint story.

    [EDIT]
    ..erm, I would think

The aign is in breach of the Consumer Information Act 1978 (afaik) but OJ is right your sister wasn't entitled to any refund, the best you can do is inform the Consumer Information Officer beacuse the add is misleading and he can either prosecute UCI for misleading the consumer or get them to change it.

Ah, the Boots Pharmaceutical Chemists case, reminds me of first year LOL

Agree with 80p though - with advertising like that on the wall, sounds like a clear case for the director of Consumer Affairs (might stop them doing it next time, or at least for Star Wars 2)
