I was looking at the Iarnrod Eireann website http://www.irishrail.ie/ and, sad person that I am, decided to start messing about at asked it to work out how to get from Connolly Station to Cherry Orchard Park West - a distance of about 4-5 miles. The thing is there is no direct trains. The first solution (starting in the morning) it came up with was:

0510 get bus from Dublin Connolly to Dublin Heuston, arrive 0545 - sensible enough

0550 get train from Dublin Heuston to Kildare, arrive 0625 - about 15-20 miles away, bear with me

0645 get train from Kildare to Cherry Orchard Park West, arrive 0719

    Journey Time: 2 hour(s) 9 minutes
    Number of Changes: 2

    to travel 4-5 miles!!!!

Have you never heard of the Arrow: Heuston to Cherry Orchard Parkwest - 5 minutes. The only snag is that the Cherry Orchard Parkwest stop is no where near Parkwest itself, probably 20 minutes walk although you would probably end up sprinting just to prevent yourself from being mugged. Alternatively you could avail of a local horse which is usually tied with a fraid knot to a snapped 6-month old oak tree in the field next to the train stop: usually 4 minutes trip depending on when the horse was fed last and with what !!

Of course I have, however the automated timetable on the website doesn't appreciate the roundabout journey it is taking you on or suggest geeting a bus / taxi instead.

Maybe it's just another indictment of the system.

Victor, I don't understand your comment. There is no roundabout journey. The Arrow leaves Heuston and the next stop is Cherry Orchard, about 5 mins away. Unless certain trains outside peak hours go directly to Kildare or something

The first stop of the earliest trains is Kildare. And if you insist on taking a train, this is the quickest way (unless you jump out at 60 miles and hour).
