    they should be
    gprs *should* be released soon
    together with new handsets

    the 3330 is exactly the same as the 3310 except it has wap

    the question is... when will there be a ready to go GPRS handset? anyone? answers on a postcard please :)

    Ure nearly better off to go with the 3310 because wap is a pile of pants. I've a 6210 and I never use wap. basically.. its pants (yes I know I'm repeating myself, but it truly reeks of week old pants). Few of my mates have 3310's and 3330's and the only problem with them seems to be in some handsets the battery goes pearshaped after a number of chargings. Its a return to nokia kinda problem. Doesnt seem to happen in all the handsets so I couldnt say its a problem with the actual handset... aaaah I'm just gonna stop now before I confuse myself.

    OK, I have next to me the 'official' web page on GPRS. I was gonna grab it and stick it on my homepage, but then I saw there was some sensitive info on it, so......I'll just give you some snippets from this. It's marked (in the source) as being written on 14/07/1997 but that's probably from some template someone made. OK...

    The commercial launch for GPRS is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2001. This is of course dependent on GPRS phones being available in volume.

    The document has obviously not been updated

    What is required to use GPRS?
    Customers will require a special GPRS handset. The only GPRS handset available to us at the moment is a Motorola T260. The customers must have a phase 2 SIM card.

    From June 20th(2001, I assume..) this service will be available to Corporate customers.

    When will this service be available to non-Corporates?
    The service will be available for non-Corporate customers later this year.

    Why is this service not available to non-Corporates now?
    Due to a shortage of handsets it has been decided to launch to Corporate customers only.

    When will Ready to Go customers be able to use the service?
    Ready to Go customers will be able to buy RtG GPRS handsets later this year

    Other bits chopped out:-

    Billing is per Kilobyte of data (ugh) and roaming negotiations have not started due to the lack of other foreign GPRS networks.

    As for WAP - I find it handy when sitting on the jacks to find out news/tech headlines, and sending emergency emails, but that's about it. :)

    re-arrange sullbhit.
    every vodaphone network apart from .ie has had gprs for ages

    and that motorola phone is a POS too

    As Micr0 pointed out, both Digifone and Eircell have had the networks for ages. In certain parts of the country, since mid/late 2000. The handsets - their availabilty and adherance to quality levels - has been a primary reason for the delay in a GPRS rollout. Pricing and a business model is another factor.

    Eircell has announced that they're launching GPRS next month, Digifone are doing much the same and Meteor just arn't at the races. However, GPRS is more than likely now to be aimed at business users and will thus be too expensive for the bulk of the public.

    Given this, there's a good chance that the price will go down, so you may want to consider getting a GPRS/GSM band phone nonetheless. Either way, wait another month or so - the introduction of GPRS handsets, even should you not want one, will drive the price of the other phones down.

    <edit>
    Just saw this. Hmmm... 0.5 cent for the average WAP deck... affordable (take back previous comment about expense). Also: "consumer postpaid offering scheduled for launch in early February" - Digifone will follow suit soon I expect.
    </edit>

    Elaborate..hmmm... I dont like wap because its too damn slow, very limited (a la eircell's wap site.. get the news or sports results.. whoop de doo) Sure its handy for the odd bit of email, but you wouldnt really want to be composing any short notes with a normal keypad. It would be better with a keyboard like on the 9210 or that keyboard erricson have for their phones. As for your 'big M', brand away.. If I had a big M on my ass I could probably do some promotional work for McDonalds.

    That's fair comment. A lot of that is due to the fact that it's a young and, by definition, technology and it was over hyped - largely by the telcos.

    So if you had worked for Eircell in the mid ninties you would have advised them to dump SMS then...

    What a funny little man you are. Just a pity you are wasting your talents here when so many people have not experienced your obvious comic genius.

    No i wouldnt have advised any mobile operator to dump SMS. I however dont see WAP being anyway as popular as SMS in the short term.

    Why not? Text entry and 2-way-SMS response is hardely what I'd call fast. And certainly it's limited. Prior to 1997, it's market penetration in Ireland was very limited (088, the most popular network, didn't have it, after all). All things you've attributed to WAP. Most operators have been actually surprised by it's take-up - I'm glad you would have been so forward thinking.

    But at least you're making a semblance of an attempt at backing up what you're saying now, after your initial glib comment - and if you'd done that in the first place, I may have argued with you, but not (mini)flamed you.
