I havent gone through the site in detail, but this to me looks more like "who has the best eduation system" rather than "who is the smartest", especially bearing in mind that it seems to concentrate on "students".

Given such a leaning towards students, I'm not surprised to see Korea and Japan at the top of the pile, as these nations seem particularly academically focussed (in Japan, for example, you have cases of toddlers going to pre-pre-schools, to get into the right pre-school, to get into the right school, to get into the right uni.....)
Pleasently surprised at Ireland's relatively high ranking. I had lost faith in our education system and its slipping standards some years ago, but I guess its not all as bad as I thought.

That was just a survey thing of students, I took part in it, randomly selected from 500 schools in Ireland i believe, 30 from each school, this was way back in 3rd year as far as i can remember, maybe 5thm, but it was a *long* time ago... it wasnt that hard now that ithink about it...

The best thing about it was the speed reading test... about 4 A4 pages of text, apparently it was made incredibly long to make sure you couldnt finish it in the time given, and you ahd to answer questions along the way to show you were reading it... i scared people my finishing early :P

When you compare literacy (basic everyday reading) and functional literacy (applied task, e.g. reading a medicine bottle), functional literacy is the more difficult task. It's not that the people can't read, it's they can't read the big Latin words.

what like, "take once, three times daily" not a sign of latin, and yet its them types of instructions that functional literacy concentrate on.

    Quite so, Baz.

I reckon being able to flick through The Star is not a
    meaningful measure of literacy.

there's an obvious gap between the educated. not one third world country is in the list.

every country has its own share of illiterate people, which you can blame on anything. ireland, on the other hand, has an education system which other countries should be jealous of. its not perfect but it gives students a chance to better themselves if they want to.

Not only that, but the fact that the UK beats Ireland in two of the classifications notwithstanding the fact that their own educators view our Education system as vastly superior to theirs makes the results.... questionable.

Hobbes... where is there a description of the Processes used do you know?
