Is it possible to connect a PC ( with a network card ) to a HP printer ( with a JetDirect card ) using an RJ45 crossover cable?

There already is a printer connected via a printer cable.

If so, will it be a simple job to implement, or am I better off buying a printer switch box?

Yes, you can connect your PC directly to the JetDirect box via CrossOver ... It should work once you have the JetDirect Box setup with an IP and on the same Subnet as the PC ...
