    The Accommodation Board.

This Board has not seen any posts for at least 4 weeks now. Does a Board with little to no frequent threads need two moderators ?? Or is there some other reason that there are two moderators on this board

    Just wondering ?

IMO every board should have at least 2 moderators!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 954 ✭✭✭Yo Mamma

    Why ?

I mean look at the Humanities Board, that has just one moderator, there is alot of thread traffic streaming through there and Castor (believe me) is more that able to keep this Board in line so to speak.

So why has Accommodation got 2 mods ?

I just think it's a bit pointless to have 2 moderators on a Board that sees no action at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,660 ✭✭✭Baz_

In that case its pointless having any.

However one point might be that the two moderators are logged on usually at different times, and they would both check the board to look for muppetry whenever they are online, now this means that there is a much better chance of catching muppetry early. If, however, you get another tomo incident and he posts on that board and he does it in the morning, and in this hypothetical case there is only one mod, who only checks from 10 in the evening onwards, well then thats a long time with the muppetry on the board. That is just one reason, im sure there are more, but I hope that suffices.

Fair enough that is one point and as u said I'm sure there are more, but why in that case do both the Music (Lecutus) and the Litrature (Lolth) Boards, to name but a few, only need 1 Mod ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,580 ✭✭✭✭Victor

The reason it has two moderators is because 2 people who asked were accepted. Let us not be the ones to judge the ways the lord (DeVore) works.

The reason it is quiet is, I imagine, that with Christmas coming, not many people are into moving (what with shopping, exams, the weather, visiting relatives, holidays ski or sun and the like). This is a pattern throughout the property industry - look at the Irish Times and Irish Independent this week and there is likely to be little, if anything, in the property section. I imagine it will pick up again in January with the new college terms and so on. It would also appear that certain parties have also stopped trolling the board.

Now, Yo Mamma, what brought you to creating this topic? Or should I leave some trollers to comment?

Just seems a bit pointless is all. ;)

    No worries.

I don't think they need to moderator's on the accomadation board.

What's the point. Crash&Burn is never online.

    What's the point like......

I was a little conflustered about the whole Moderator malarchy myself - But the accomodation board is alien to me...

Some moderator's are more "Online" than others-
Some moderator's are capable of kicking a substantial ammount more arse than others-
Some moderator's are better at "bribing" the superpower's of Boards.ie better than others-
Some moderator's merely "Fit the bill"-

What had me scratching my head in confusion was Moderator ranking - We (Obviously) have the Big Cheese of Boards.ie, and his right hand men, but then we have Super Moderator's and then basic, boring "Moderator"'s :D

I think I better shut my mouth before I become the vicitm of a drive by shooting at the hands of the Boards.ie Underdog's...

I love this weird and wonderful place - All those funny colours on the walls... *BUMP*

I found my current home off the accomdation board, and although it's pretty quiet at the moment there are times of the year when its quite active. Definitely a good resource for the student members of boards.

I think most boards should have 2 moderators, makes it easier for us to keep the muppetry down and it gives us somebody to back us up on any 'issues'.

ok, this is how my brain works with regard to mods.

Recently we decided that two mods are better then one for the reasons of muppet control, holidays, and also one mod watching how the other mod is working with the UNBRIDLED POWER of it all... kinda like a failssafe.

We pick mods who we think are interested in the topic and preferably people we have met in person (though lately thats impossible really).

Gandalf WAS the mod of the humanities forum but elected to become the mod of the Politics forum when it was split off from Humanities. Castor doesnt really need a side kick and if he does, he's big enough to ask me for one.

Why it bothers ANYONE that there are two mods per board I really cant figure out. *shrug*

    DeV.

Is that the right question, shouldn't the board itself just be deleted?

Why delete the board? It's just gonna be needed again, when all us students become homeless again. That'd be like throwing out your chriimbo decorations every year because they take up attic space :) (Like that festive reply? :D)

What is Karma? (inspired by Wayne Luke of Sitepointforums.com)

In Buddhist terms of old, Karma is the Universal Power Source that
governs your life. If you are good to others, you are given a good and
prestigious life. If you are bad to others you are given a bad and
shameful life often for several reincarnations.

You can now take this concept to your vBulletin forums. If you post high
quality and thoughtful messages, your fellow members will approve of
your posts. By their approval you gain Karma. If you post incorrect,
misleading or messages against the guidelines, they will disapprove
    and you will lose Karma.

Your karmic rating will be displayed underneath all of your posts. Only
you will know your exact number of karmic points-- you can view this
by clicking on the Karma icon on the right hand side of your own post
or through the vBHome control panel. For every 100 points positive or
negative, you will gain another karmic rating light. After 5 lights, they
will take twice as long to appear.

What does this mean for your forums?

It allows new users to quickly see the resident forum idiots. It allows
anyone to sort the signal from noise by checking the user's karma.
It will also encourage more thoughtful posts from your members as
the karma points serve as a reward for helping others.

The amount of Karma that a user can give or take away is
determined by a number of factors-- an old respected user might
give 7 points with each Karma click, while a newbie will give only 1.

Many other things are possible with the Karma system as the base--
reward high ranking users with additional features or bonuses. With
some minor programming you could sort and filter threads by the
    user karmic ratings.

    Preventing Karmic Fraud...................................................

Checks and Balances are implemented at different levels for different
size forums. If you have a site with 20 concurrent users, your settings
will be quite different from a site with 200. You will have an opportunity
to choose the starting settings in Step 12 of the installation routine. You
can then fine tune them with the Cpanel. For a Medium size site, a user:

-can give 10 Karma clicks every 24 hours
-must Karma 20 other people before clicking the same person again
    -must have 50 posts
-must have more positive Karma than everyone starts with

These checks are implemented to prevent user fraud. People will try
and manipulate their Karma levels by using extra handles, but these
checks and balances have been worked out over 8 months of high
traffic user testing and will be very effective in keeping the Karma
    system honest.
