Sun considers charging for StarOffice

Sun Microsystems is evaluating the pricing plan for its StarOffice desktop productivity suite, and one option under consideration is charging users for the software.

StarOffice 5.2 is available as a free download or on a CD for a nominal fee. The Cupertino, Calif., company is not sure that this is the way to go when it releases the Final version of StarOffice 6.0 in the second quarter of next year, however.

Isn't the base of StarOffice, OpenOffice, GPL'd now? Of course, that doesn't mean they can't commercialise it, but I'm not sure how they'd go about it.

Dunno Dahamsta. You'd think that if whatever code it's built off is GPL'd it'd be hard to commercialise it.

Maybe they can say they're product even though build off a GPL code base is unique and as such they're not charging for the OpenOffice base but for the Star Office components.

    Sounds flaky though.

Dunno Micro, haven't installed it yet. I intend to this week at some stage.

Flaky indeed. I mean, there's nothing /legally/ stopping them from commercialising it - there's nothing in the GPL that says you can't charge for a GPL'd product - but when the buyer is freely able to redistribute it...? Also, the OSS community would probably rail at the idea. They couldn't get too indignant about it, but you can see some of them being right miffed...

Nice bunch of articles this morning by the way. I'll shove some of them on Linux.ie in a mo.
