for some strange reason all my British terrestrial channels have terrible interfeance tonight from signals coming in from the south west of England. this has been happening alot recently. now to the point of this post, with this happening a lot and at this time of year(it always acts up in the summer time) would it be possible to receive a signal direct from south west England all the time if i put up a huge aerial. points to note: i live in the middle part of Co. Waterford and i am at sea level. there are no trees in the way and i have a clear view of the sea in the direction of the south west of England. from what i read here the signal travels well over the sea

The answer to your question Mossy is probably yes!
The interference you are experiencing is Co-channel,caused by that great big high pressure area currently anchored in the North Sea.
High pressure(usually more commom in the Summer) causes TV signals to travel (especially over a sea path) many 100's of miles longer than their intended coverage area. When this happens they interfere with the channels you normally watch as they are on the same frequency.
The signals coming in from the Uk today for instance are so strong-they are even causing co-channel on TV3 and TG4!

These conditions are likely to last for at least all of next week and are absolute bliss for someone like me as I will move the aerials around to see what I can pick up!
At the moment even with the wrong group of aerials and pointed out of it beam-I am picking up Crystal all the channels from Caradon hill including channel four.

I have tried a long group A aerial here outside of HP conditions and got fair Caradon-but it goes in the rain :(
I would suspect with twin aerials up there or a quad, I would get more reliable stuff-that is what you would want to do , and you could be spending maybe 4 or £500 -not really worth it when they'll all be on Sky soon!
You are located further South and probably geographically closer that I.
Once you have a sea view you are in business-as long as the beam from the tx is somewhere in that sea view.
Height above sea level helps but isn't crucial.

wonderfull. i will now definately be looking into this. i will ask a friend of mine who has a huge aerial up on his roof. i am almost sure it is group A as he uses it for TV3 (he is in a blackspot BTW). fingers crossed. the fact that all these channels will more than likely be on Sky soon doesn't matter because it will be for the bedroom and not the main room. cheers madman
