I am about to install Nesaint network monitoring tool on Mandrake 8.0 and I was wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks for installation and the running of this program.

Netsaint is available for free at http://www.netsaint.org/

Its pretty straightforward, just follow the instructions in the docs.
The only problem I had was linking against mysql/pgsql/ldap libaries
and the paths to these were hard coded to where they would be found on most linux systems
but I was installing on FreeBSD,
a little Makefile tweaking was all that was needed.

Oh, one tip, use nmap2netsaint (in contrib section)to get the innitial
configureation for your network, it will pick up most things
and then you can just tweak and add to your pleasure.

You should look into using nrpep to monitor things like load/swap/disk-usage and
things on other machines, quite usefull.
Best to just to install/configure it on one machine and then copy it across to the other machines when your happy with the config.
You should also use tcp_wrappers/ipchains or something to restrict who can access it.

If you have any problems we'll do our best :)

Also get the extract modules and look at neat as well its pretty handy for doing stuff via a web interface rather then having to edit all the config files( note having multiple config files can be a pain)

    Netsaint is pretty slick alrighty.

Depends how your brain works really, there are a number of splits in the config...
Things like command/timeperiod/contact definitions you will rarely alter.
the host configs you will only alter when a machine is added removed,
I find that only the service definitions are really the only things that I alter.
And in reality once you have it set up, it will just sit there for a few months until you make
    major changes.

I started using netsaint when it was all one config file, but when the started
seperating things out I found that it was a logical
seperation and I actually preferred it.

but hey, its all down to what you like, you can slap everything together if you like :)
