Solaris 8 install problems on x86

    Hi folks,

I'm having problems installing Solaris 8 on a Dell Optiplex GX150. I'm getting resource conflict messages when detecting the machine's hardware, which I think is causing problems later in the install. Neither NT nor Mandrake Linux have problems installing on the machine, and neither report any conflicts.

Does Solaris 8 support devices that share an IRQ? Can anyone think of anything else that might cause the Solaris installer to fail (and reboot the machine) at a point after hardware detection is complete but before hard disk partitioning takes place?

    Any help greatly appreciated

    Bosco

Well, Its along time now since I installed Solaris, but I remember the install software asking before the installation whether or not you want hardware detection.
You could try configuring the hardware manually which may eliminate some problems.
You could consult documentation from Sun Microsystems.
Can't really say what the problem could be as i've never encountered what you've described.
I doubt any operating system could support sharing of IRQ's
Try tweaking your BIOS setup perhaps?

Windows supports sharing of IRQs, I know that. According to my motherboard manual, one of my PCI slots is shared with the AGP slot, or something odd like that.

Try taking out the network card autodetection - follow the instructions to make specific scan for hardware, and take out the network card in the list to scan, that might help.
I just remember I met very similar situation with one of the Dell machines, but it simply hang on that stage.
