Flat screen monitors

Do they have a negative impact on gaming? My oul lad is getting a dell system and im thinking of nicking the monitor:
    Dell 1503FP Monitor

Up to 75% space saving of its CRT equivalent. Ideal for financial, banking and other corporate applications that require clarity of alphanumeric detail. Complies with TCO and MPPII standards for low heat/power consumption and lower electromagnetic radiation emissions.

A viewing area comparable to a 17" monitor in a smaller footprint and space saving design. Superb picture quality at all resolutions, excellent contrast levels, zero radiation, no flicker and no reflection.

Will it turn my fps/refresh to poo? will it have 'trails'?

Yummmm....er..it's crap, you dont want it. give it to me.....

    or.

    Go for it.
It should be Active matrix which means it doesn't really refresh, so it's not going to affect your FPS (Presuming then you mean with Vsynch on). Also trails shouldn't be an issue so long as it's of decent quality, you're more likely to see this on CRT as the phosphors don't discharge fast enough, whereas on an active matrix screen it's down to the cell switch time (think of it like a grill of shutters that open and close to let light through).

I'm surprised it's that good at multiple resolutions actually as this is the only thing stopping me getting one (They are optimised for one max resolution and must resize the image (usually badly) for anything else). But if you're happy with what you've seen I'd say ...oh I already did.

LCD monitors are crap for quake-style games, moving things leave a small trail (the better LCD monitors are 'not as crap' , but theyre still 'crap' compared to CRT monitors)

What about Big plasma screen HDTVs with VGA input?

I only ask cos there's a very slight chance we might be getting one.
The mother took a lok at our TV and how it sticks out from the wall. Then she cast her gaze to the picture hanging up behind it.
"I'd like one of those flat tvs" she said. "yessssss" I said, rubbing my hads together with an evil gleam in my eye....

Having been a dedicated CRT fan for years, I was most pleasantly surprised to see the quality from a TFT monitor when a friend brought one round for a LAN party some months back.

SInce moving to another country and building a new box, I have moved to using a 15" TFT. At present, the games I play on it are RTCW and Comanche 4. I can see no problems with screen-flicker, trails, blurring, or anything.....

The thing to remember is that there is a huge difference in a notebook screen and a TFT monitor. I dont know if its the actual tech in the monitor, or simply the whole package, but I dont see any of the classic flat-screen problems.

The major disadvantage to the monitor is this - TFTs do not handle differing resolutions half as well as CRTs. My monitor maxes at 1024x768, anything lower turns a bit blurry due to the interpolation used. So I always run in 1024....as long as the game supports it (Diablo 2 being a classical example of poor resolution support).

    BTW - I'm using a cheap no-name monitor!

So....I'd have no problems recommending one, but it does have limitations.

As for gas-plasma....dunno. Never seen one used for gaming.

    jc

It probably does, but not everyone has the space for a 19" monitor :) The table I use at the moment couldnt fit a 17" monitor and a keyboard, so I had no choice but to go flat.

I'd prefer a decent 19" Flat CRT to a flatpanel TFT, but luckily I don't have to live in a shoe box with half an ironing board for a desk.

I still don't think the flatpanels (well the ones I've used recently) are as good as having a proper CRT but if you have no space ...

Well, according to the bloke in Dell sales, its not an LCD screen. He was a little vague, but he seemed to be describing a CRT without the actual CRT (!!???!!??) and a flat panel. God knows what will arrive :)
I ordered a 19" fp tft for me da's system , so ill let you know what it is and how it works out:)
(im praying it will work out, cos im sick of squinting at my 15" monitor)

a TFT is an LCD screen

basically the sales guy is talking bollox to you, he probably doesnt even really know what hes talking about himself..

a TFT LCD screen works just like any other LCD screen(as seen in hand-held LCD car-racing games, etc), it has a back light so it appears luminous, kindof like a CRT when viewed from front, thats about all it has in common with CRT's though

TFT stands for "thin film transistor" , and means absolutely nothing for end users

could be talking about a flat screen monitor and not a flat panel, they also come in TFT, unless hes charging you 650 pounds for the 19" , its not a flat panel. i picked up a 17" at a steal for about 500 notes.

Now he could be, but i dont think so, about the new flate panel crt monitors i was reading about some months back, not LCD based. It would be allot cheaper but i havent seen them about

nope, flatscreen CRT's are not called TFT's ,
anyway they dont save space, theyre usually the same size as the rest of the crt's, just a lot heavier

also, you shouldnt be paying 500 quid for a 17inch flat crt, check prices at www.dabs.co.uk - i got an iiyama vision master pro 450 there last year, ended up costing around 550 irish (including shipping).. but that was last year, and it was a 19inch

no i paid that for a LCD not a CRT, do you think im insane?

Today's dumb question: you find which of the two much better?
