Once in a lifetime chance.....

    Hi there all....

Since a kid, I always wanted to do a 1/2 year travel around the world and am still hoping to do such before I am 40 (miles away from that at the moment!)....

I would love to do it via some sort of alternative open transport like a trial bike or something like that....a few places I would love to go see are Siberia and Asia (I know..on a bike?!?) and also South America..

(I hope this is the right forum)....I would like to hear of any plans or ideas ye may have or even better some experiences ye have had whilst travelling the world.......this is a big project for me and so it requires big research to get it right....

My other concern is the likes of personal security whilst travelling through foreign lands, like Columbia, Northern Russia/Mongolia...

My personal belief is that EVERY person should have a chance to see their world in the full and experience life to the fullest. I also believe that seeing as we pay over 70% of our lifetime wages in taxes, be it directly or indirectly thru goods & services...that our government who, purpose is to represent the wishes of the people should make a sponsorship programme to any person who wishes to do such....

It is sad for me to know of people in Eire who haven't been outside their own country and they are in their forties...(this is my opinion)

    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
    TIA,
    James.

I disagree. I was in Sumatra for 3 weeks a year ago and had the best time of my life. Seems the lovelable Irish are even known that far abroad. Its very strange having an Indonesian lad asking 'Conas a tá tú?'. I'm going back.

I'm currently planning a trip myself that will take in Sout East Asia, Oz, New Zealand and South America starting later this year.

In the mean time my sister is currently travelling around mexico on a 650 cc BMW with her friend Travelling Jack. My sis is offroadannie here on boards.ie.

The British Dept. of Foreign Affairs is the best place for security advice on other countries (/me slaps Regi for cheering). Although they're not the best on visa situations for Irish citizens. Also check out Lonely Planets
Thorn Tree. It's a great place to get advice from those 'out in the field'.

Unt finally I'm currently writing a travelling section for my site http://www.showerofbastards.com/ but it's not finished yet. There will be stuff there by the weekend, I swear.

Most visits to Indonesia are trouble-free. However, particular care is needed for visits to some regions and others should be avoided altogether as specified below.

We advise against all travel to West Timor, Ambon and the rest of Maluku Province, Poso in Central Sulawesi and Aceh.

Following military action terrorists in Afghanistan, there have been protests in some cities in Indonesia. These may recur and visitors and residents should be careful.

True, I'd avoid Indonesian Borneo as well, Malysian Borneo is much more stable.
