Plug and Play?

Now my idea of a plug and play OS would be if you plugged something in and it worked. Sounds simple dosn't it?

But no! For a plug and play OS you have to specifically tick the box during installation but from then things get easier. Simply plug in a device, observe that nothing happens then shut down the computer. Start the computer up again and if you're lucky it'll detect the device this time and ask where the drivers are so you can instally them.
This is where you hope to god it's a new device and the CD isn't scratched or the disk full of bad sectors. You were thinking once you found the drivers and put them in the drive you were finished, didn't you. But wait theirs more!
Once the computer is satisfied it has spent ten times what should be necessary looking for the driver your helpful OS refuses to install it so you can enjoy installing it manually. If by some miracle this works you get to re-boot the computer again. Who dosn't love the sound of the computer checking for Boot disks in the drives and that little beep! when the BIOS finishes and the OS starts....then stops. It can't the drivers for a device in the registery. This is no surprise since you've never heard of the device and you can't find it in the registery to remove it. Instead you get the fun of waiting by your computer untill it stops, to press a key like a labratory rat to get it going again.
But joy of joys! Your device is finally installed. It might not work properly straight away but that's an important feature. The update is the needle and the Internet the haystack as you happily run up you phone bill thanks to someone elses far-sighted mistake.
Once all the data makes it's way through the maze of the internet past that electric fence some thoughtful farmer has earthed on the telephone wire, you'll be ready to install again!
One more manual install and yet another re-boot later your device works perfectly, for now.

So there you have it - the simplicity of a plug and play OS. Amazing eh?

    Assasins do it from behind.
