I've been giving serious thought to getting myself a guitar. Anyway, I wouldn't know where to start so could anybody give me any suggestions or guidelines for buying one? I'd be interested in playing Indie rock, punk and metal.

Secondly, what's the best way to go about learning? Is there any good books, cds etc that are good for learning to play the guitar? Keep in mind I have very sparse knowledge when it comes to reading music :)

    Thanks in advance.

I'd say look in the Buy and Sell and so on for 2nd hand guitars rather than go to a shop and get ripped off. My gibson Sg copy cost me 60 quid in London. it might help to have a friend who knows something bout guitars to advise you before you buy.

Just put your fingers where shown, moving up or down the guitar neck and you're sorted. punk rock. also get some beatles song books to show you chords and look up help on the net.

www.tabcrawler.com is a great site. It's got tabs for Guitar, Bass and Drums and it's got a training section. Well good.

As for what guitar to buy...
see if you can blag yourself an acoustic as it's gonna be less fuss initially - it'll be slightly more difficult to play at first, but will stand to you later on in life as you'll find electric guitars SO much easier to play.

Try finding out if some of your mates play and have a bash on their instruments at first to get a feel for it.

Good luck with it mate - the more the merrier!

...and if your looking for lessons then you could mail me at brunkard@hotmail.com

I run a busy south side practice and have been teaching beginners to the relatively advanced for the last 5 years.
Students also get a discount on new musical equipment.

    There ya go!

I think you'd be best getting an acoustic first off even though they're a little harder to play at first, cause you'll be able to change over and back from electric easier that way,and it's less complicated at first. I agree with Kharn that tabcrawler is a great site ,it has a tabs for almost everything, although some of them are a little off and seeing 30 something different versions of popular songs like smells like teen spirit is going a lil overboard.

    Good luck wiith your playing.
