    Hi,

As far as I am aware, the only thing the installer needs the phone line for is authorising the subscription card. Of course I may be wrong, but this was the case when I had my digibox installed in April.

Tony, one of the guys I have seen posting here, installs satellite dishes so he will probably be able to either confirm or correct my answer.

Same here, but I beleive that you can just ring up customer services (on any phone), give them your viewing card number, and then your digibox serial number & model number, and they'll send out the signal to pair the card to the box, thus giving you your channels. :)

Yeah, I thought they could do that too, but then I can't think of any other reason why they would need the phoneline, as the interactive services aren't really available to ROI subscribers  Perhaps (as reported here, I think) Sky *are* in talks with eircom (spit) to provide interactive services.

The best thing to do is to ring around different installers and specifically ask whether or not the phoneline is needed, I would think it isn't, but then again Sky may have a new policy.

It is actually a condition of the contract that the phone line be connected. Unofficially I have been told that sky would rather lose out on the phoneline to keep a customer, but the retailer runs the risk of not being paid if it is not authorised by modem connection.

    Guys,

came to this discussion late - I got a Sky connection yesterday and the installer didn't connect up the phone line at all! Didn't even ask me about it. It was never mentioned. I wondered subsequently had he forgotten and was I going to be missing out on anything...

up until sept. you didn't have to connect the phone line.sky since then will not accept a contract without a phone no.

The installer got sky to do the "switch on" via satellite which just marrys the card to the box, you wont be missing out on anything, but the installer may be hit for the installation charge.
