This URL now seems to work for me. Looks like was an airbus after suffering engine failure. That's damn bad luck. :(

Another plane has crashed, this time in Queens. You can read a blurb at Yahoo. CNN.com isn't responding for me. LaGuardia, Newark and JFK are closed now. It was an American Airlines 767 on its way to landing at JFK. Update: 11/12 14:54 GMT by T: New reports indicate that the plane was departing from JFK, not arriving. Also, CNN has confirmed that this was American Airlines flight 587, an Airbus A 300.

At the moment they are just saying it was engine failure. So far it isn't clear how many casualties or even deaths we are talking about. It apparently hit 4 buildings on the way down in the Queens area of the city.

This is the link I managed to get the info from
    http://www.sky.com/skynews/storytemplate/storytoppic/0,,30000-1035003,00.html

Now I just heard that there were 300 ppl on the plane. How many dead, I dont know?

IMO it's just too much of a coincidence to ignore the possibility of another terrorist attack. As a precaution all airports in the New York area have closed.

A plane has crashed in New York.

It is understood the plane was an
    Airbus A300 and suffered engine
failure shortly after taking off from
    JFK airport.

Reports say the aircraft may have
been carrying up to 246 passengers when it plunged into a
    residential area in Queens.

The jet, thought to be flight 587, was heading to Santo Domingo in
    the Dominican Republic.

There are reports the plane hit a number of homes near Rockaway
beach. One eyewitness said pieces of the plane were falling off
    mid-air.

"I saw a large piece hit a hood of a car," one women told Fox News.

"It seem to fold and fall onto a residential area," adding that she
initially thought the plane was a Concorde.

The incident comes two months after the US terrorist attacks on the
    US.

Security chiefs said there was no evidence of terrorist activity but all
airports in New York have now been closed as a precautionary
measure. Bridges and tunnels have been closed The city has also
been put on the highest state of alert.

A huge plume of smoke is rising above the New York skyline as the
    wreckage burns.

The Dow Jones dropped 200 points as news of the crash reached
    the markets.

Early reports said the plane was a Boeing 767 - the same type
which crashed into the World Trade Centre.

    More follows ..

It's time to be skeptical me reckons. Parts of the plane falling off mid-air sounds like a low-power explosive or sabotage before takeoff. It's a bit too coincidental for my liking :(

The official story at the moment is "engine failure", but eye-witness reports put it more like "engine loss" i.e. the engine departed ways from the aircraft.

Whether this was an accident or sabotage, it is a terrible day.

Sky news has footage of the engine that fell off. Engine can and have fallen off planes. FBI are saying there was an explosion before hand.

    Kyro

www.ananova.com is responsive and is covering the story.

Also, you can get a webcast (radio) from www.talksport.net which is currently hooking to Fox, CNN and anyone else as well as discussing on their own.

    Reasonably useful.

They've recoverd one of the "black boxes",
so hopefully they'llhave some actual facts to tell soonest.
Sometimes I get the feeling the media hope for the worst,
ie that it was another terrorist attack.

Planes crash on a regular basis and NYC is a very busy hub, its only been a couple of years since the last planecrashed there, only that ended up in the ocean.

    Mike.

This is of course going to be another massive blow for the Airline and Hotel sector of the economies of the 'Western' world. Already there has been a massive fall in the American (and doubtlessly other) stock markets.

This has the potential to cripple the aviation sector. Consider:

After September 11, people realised the terrorist threat that was posed to air travel. Though this threat was always present, events on that day served to focus those fears into a tangible sense of danger.

Of course, out of this, restrictions have been made to assuage the fears of those wishing to travel by plane, in the form of increased security at all airports as well as on the planes themselves.

If this was indeed a terrible accident, rather than as a result of sabotage, then one might say that such incidents have happened before, without any major impact on overall plane travel. For such an incident to occur during a period of intense scrutiny in the aviation sector may well bring an immediacy to an omnipresent danger.

If this was an act of sabotage - whether it was committed by middle eastern terrorists or not, it will heavily erode confidence in the security measures taken thus far. Should such a serious breach of security have had occurred, even in a state of high alert, it will make a mockery of all attempts to ensure that the events of September 11 can never be repeated.

What the US Government should do now is ground every piece of equipment that can fly, and refuse to allow them to leave the ground pending the results of thorough examinations. Then, at least assertions that this was a 'freak occurance' may be taken somewhat more seriously.

Anyone watching Sky news this morning?

My god they are evil (I was laughing but seriously).

Sky news interviewed some woman who was in charge of the tourist board for New York and was asking her was it safe to go back to New York and she went on about how it was safe.

Meanwhile Sky News had her head in 1/4 of the screen and in the rest it had footage of firemen trying to put out the fires and showing wreakage of the plane all while she was talking!
